Guest guest
Sorry to hear of your tribulations with your hard drive. They are a pest when they start going wrong. Allan is also getting a new H.D for his Christmas so you are in good company. I have ordered a 40GB drive for him so that should keep him happily playing his golf games, etc for a while. The computer supplier locally had a fire last Sunday so they are busy restocking for Christmas. Should get it on Wednesday at the latest. I took over Ann's cable modem when she left but, as usual, she did not fit the ethernet board so I cannot use it. Am not quite so badly off with the 56K modem but when Allan is a bit better we may get the computer stripped and the part fitted. It even looks as though it could be soon as he is so much better. The sickness stopped with his new medications on Tuesday evening - the first since September, and he has not been sick since, thank God. All I need to do now is shut down the computer and have the withdrawal symptoms of being without it for a few hours at most. So relieved to hear you had a back up at the office of the EDS Awareness Campaign. The ramifications of the world Stock Markets after 11th September, will bring a world wide recession. Hopefully we can all survive relatively unscathed. My e-mail program is misbehaving. I have discovered I miss the first two e-mails of every batch I collect. Of course, I don't know what I have missed but it is very annoying and I don't know how to rectify it. Any suggestions would be welcome. Next week must be better than your weekend. When you hit rock bottom the only way is up!! Have a good week and it is lovely to have you back on-line. Love and hugs, Lilian
Guest guest
Lilian, > Sorry to hear of your tribulations with your hard drive. They are a > pest when they start going wrong. So true! I've been suspecting a problem for awhile because it's been running very slow. Fortunately I managed to back up a lot of data. > Allan is also getting a new H.D > for his Christmas so you are in good company. Kerry tried to tell me that since my HD failed, he'd get me a new one for Christmas. I told him that wouldn't work for 2 reasons. 1) I can't wait until Christmas for my business PC to work. 2) I can declare the new HD as a tax deductible business expense and use my business income to pay for it. > I have ordered a 40GB drive for him That's what I got too. Actually two. I got a 7200 RPM Maxtor 40GB HD for my main drive and a 5400 RPM Maxtor 40GB HD for my back-up drive. > so that should keep him happily playing his golf games, Hee hee. Kerry has his games too. All I play are card games, but he's got all kinds of games. > etc for a while. The computer supplier locally had a fire last > Sunday so they are busy restocking for Christmas. Should get it on > Wednesday at the latest. OH NO! I hate when that happens. Our supplier's warehouse for one of our export items caught fire about a month ago and our whole shipment was destroyed. > I took over Ann's cable modem when she left but, as usual, she did > not fit the ethernet board so I cannot use it. Am not quite so badly > off with the 56K modem I've a 56K modem, but our telephone lines are pathetic. We are in a " dead zone. " Our neighborhood is not particularly high on anyone's list for upgrades. We can't get DSL from anyone. Our cell phones cut in and out inside the house. My neighbor was on a waiting list for several months to get cable modems. It's really frustrating. > but when Allan is a bit better we may get the > computer stripped and the part fitted. I am so happy to hear something positive. He's been in my thoughts even if I haven't been emailing much lately. > All I need to do now is shut down the computer and have the > withdrawal symptoms of being without it for a few hours at most. A few hours is so much better than several days. I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have access at work. > So relieved to hear you had a back up at the office of the EDS > Awareness Campaign. I keep backups at work of a lot of things. I also backup work stuff at home. It's part of my disaster plan. All my websites are backed up at both places. I keep disks at home for my accounting data at work. The EDS Today back issues are on both computers and on disk. The really critical stuff is backed up. The main thing I lost is my unread and saved email. I had a LOT of messages sitting in my inbox waiting for me to have time to read/respond. Unfortunately, it took as long as 7 minutes for one message to open, so I wasn't working through them very quickly. Before the HD failed, they all just disappeared. > The ramifications of the world Stock Markets > after 11th September, will bring a world wide recession. Hopefully > we can all survive relatively unscathed. I hope so too. With Boeing here in WA, we're getting hit pretty hard in our economy. For the first time ever, the property management company is doing a food drive here in our office complex. Most of the offices in my building have all closed up and are for lease. Companies are either closing or moving to cheaper buildings. It's scary because when I leave at night I am the last person in the whole complex. I lock up at dark just to be safe because there's no one around in case something happens. > My e-mail program is misbehaving. I have discovered I miss the first > two e-mails of every batch I collect. Of course, I don't know what I > have missed but it is very annoying and I don't know how to rectify > it. Any suggestions would be welcome. That's the strangest thing I've heard. All I can think of is to try to reinstall the program or to ask your ISP if there's a glitch in their system. Very odd. > Next week must be better than your weekend. When you hit rock bottom > the only way is up!! Well, I wouldn't call it rock bottom. I can actually be grateful that the flat tire happened at work because I didn't have my cell phone with me. I am also lucky that the tow truck arrived quickly and I managed to get to the tire store 20 minutes before they closed. I'm also fortunate to have backedup most things and not lost my critical data. So, I would class this weekend's troubles as a bummer, but nowhere near as bad as it could have been. > Have a good week and it is lovely to have you back on-line. Thanks. It's good to be back, even if it is only during work hours. Well, now to go restore the EDS Awareness Campaign site. -Barb
