You probably have the spinal headache that is caused when a small

amount of the spinal fluid is leaking from the area the tubing is

inserted. It will stop leaking on it's own, but it can take a long

time. My doctor insisted I have the patch to fix the leak prior to

letting me leave the hospital. You might want to ask about the

patch. I couldn't hold any food down until after the patch. The

draw blood from your arm and inject it into the thecal area. The

blood then clots and plugs the leak. Pretty tricky, huh! The

recovery from the surgery is not an easy one (in my opinion) but it

is much easier to get through without that horrid headache!

Hope you have great results from the pump. I'm happy your trial was

a success.

Sounds like a spinal headache- several of us had a blood patch that cured

everything quickly. Lavon

Surgery for pump was 12/28. I came home yesterday, not because I

I am very weak and have little appetite. Sleep all the time.

I have a headache when I'm up.

Hi! , I had my pump put in last Dec. and my experience wasn't

good. It took a lot out of me and rest is the very best you can do for

yourself. It takes a lot longer to recoup than it did before PLS. The

head aches could be spinal head aches and you should call your Dr. to see

about a spinal patch. They work right away because I had one after my

daughter was born. I had to have surgery for my pump in February and I

had spinal head aches both times but the Dr.s refused to do a spinal

patch so I just had to stay down and wait it out. PLEASE call your DR. it

only take a few minutes to have the patch done and you shouldn't have to

suffer with the head aches. My baclofen test was like a vacation also. I

haven't been able to get to that point with the pump yet but I am so

grateful for pump because I know I wouldn't be walking at all (I use the

word walking loosely) with out it. It also helps with the pain, every

time I have my pump increased I take less pain meds. . You take care and

rest it does get better it just takes time. The people on this web site

kept me going. Their encouragement and prayers keep me going still. God

Bless, B. Oregon

You will hear from many people who have experienced the same problem.

will be able to fill you in if she gets a chance and Roy s

will have some comments, too. I have not had an experience with the pump,

but have had two experiences with spinal fluid and headaches. They really

hurt and kept me on my back or lower than 30 degrees elevation of head.

Hope you feel better soon and can begin to enjoy this wonderful new year.

I agree with most comments re: the blood patch. When I was undergoing the various tests to "rule out" other diseases, I had a lumbar puncture aka a spinal tap. The doctor had me lay down for about 4 hours after the procedure and sent me home. After a short while, the spinal headache began and I tried to soldier through it for 2 days. Once the pain got too great, I had the blood patch done and I was feeling better within minutes (literally) . I wanted to hug every person involved in arranging the patch.....registration clerk, lab tech, nurse, the doc. Oh what a relief it was! To all who are "suffering" through the headache......don't fool yourself or try to be a "tough guy".....get the blood patch and minimize your agony and that of your caregiver.

  • 1 year later...

I had a mastectomy on May 1st and had no cancer in the nodes. I did not need radiation but am on Tamoxifen for the next five years. My cancer was ductal carcinoma in situ and was found all over my left breast. I also had problems after my mastectomy. I came down with an infection and fluid in my reconstructed breast. I was re-hospitalized and I got a lot of great support and TLC from my doctors and nurses. It really helped. It also really helped to rest totally after I got home an let people take care of me. My positive thought for you and your mom. You are terrific.

Kimbell

My mom wasn't offered chemo, is that a usual passage after mastectomy? She was told she would be put on tamoxifen only. For the last 2 years during her annual mammogram a cyst had been found but they did needle biopsy and because the fluid was clear they never checked it out any further. It was 9 months ago she had one and after a repeat they said it was all good .So she went back in Aug and went through the routine of 2 mammograms and then they ordered a ultrasound , and repeated it . The doc suggested a lumpectomy to get rid of the cyst because it was causing her pain. On Sept 4th 2003 we got the news that the cyst was cancer. It was a very small mass with no cancer in the margins. She was offered radiation or mastectomy but was told radiation on your left side by your heart could cause heart problems later on. Mom opted for a mastectomy. It was done on Sept 29, a radical mastectomy. The results was that she was cancer free, none in the breast tissue and none in her lymph nodes. The drainage tubes were taken out 5 days after surgery . the following Thursday she had to have fluid drained from the site , a lot had accumulated but the doc said that was normal. Well 4 days later, which was yesterday she was in such pain and I had to rush her to the ER. they drained mass amounts of fluid from the mastectomy site and packed it.She had the chills also so they kept her. Also her oxygen level in her blood is low.She is there now, in the hospital and she is being taken care of well. She is 69 years old.

I cant begin to tell you all how grateful I am for you guys. I so needed someone to talk to and have someone listen to me .i have been her caregiver and I am about wiped out from it but I must go on, because she is my mom
