Guest guest
Another soul from the beautiful Pacific Northwest! Regards, Steve Mathisen < " }}}}>< SCMathisen@... ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ " Indeed, I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just. " -- Jefferson New Member Hi, I'm new to the group and thought I would introduce myself. I spent 5 days in the hospital with a serious foot infection. Came close to having it cut off. When I went in, my bG was in the 400s (3 years ago, when I was diagnosed, they were in the 500 and 600 range). My A1C is around 12. I was on Metformin and Glyburide, now I'm on Metformin, Insulin NPH and Insulin R (along with Lisinopril, and Augmentin for the infection). I was up to around 380 lbs 3 years ago. For the last year I've been stuck around 260-290 lbs. I am just beginning to count carbs. I went out and bought a Palm handheld and found Diabetes Pilot to track my bG, meds, and eating. Anyone know any free or cheap software for this purpose? I've also been to the Accu-chek website where they have free online tracking. I need to learn more about carbs and food. Hopefully I can get that info here. I'd rather not try a normal weight loss group. Right now I'm buying frozen dinners. I know that they are not the best or the cheapest or the least fat, but they are better and cheaper than what I was spending on food. Mostly things like Lean Cuisine and Healthy Choice. I figure one frozen dinner with maybe fruit or salad on the side and milk/juice is better than going to Safeway, spending $40 and winding up eating all that in one or two sittings. I live alone and cook for myself, but when I buy food, I tend to either eat it all at once, or it sits and spoils in the 'fridge. Well, enough for now. BTW - I'm a 43yo male in Seattle, WA. Btw - My cholesterol is perfect. It surprised me and the Docs. I don't remember the numbers, but was told that they indicate that I exercise everyday... Yeah, right! =) Eyes, liver, everything else check out fine. It's just the bG and the weight mostly. --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
I can and do cook. I just haven't taken the time in several months to do so. I really wished that, back in my day, home economics in high school was open to boys. Things like meal planning. Just call me Chris. Not my real name, but I use a couple names in the yahoo groups and answer to them fine. I ride the bus. Foot, leg and hip problems keep me from driving anymore. I fell a couple of times doing construction work. The bus system here is pretty good and I live in a great location for busses and stores. One bus takes about an hour to get to the main hospital and also goes to the VA hospital in between there and here. I have three conveyance stores within 2 blocks and three major groceries and three drug stores within 2 miles, all on the bus route. There is also a fresh fruit/veggie stand (large) right on the corner. Closed this time of year (other than as a Christmas tree lot last month). --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Diabetes Pilot is at http://www.diabetespilot.com/ I really like it. Free 15 day trial and $24 registration. Real easy to use and intuitive. Been using it for 3 days now. I track glucose readings, meds and meals. The meds list is customisable. I have my insulin by type and unit and my pills by name and mg. The food database is large and customisable. I can add or delete food. Food is in a searchable database that has groups and subgroups like Beverages > Carbonated Beverage > Cola > and items like cola w/ caffeine (1 fl oz) and have following info: Total Carb, Fibre, Protein, Fat, Calories. Once you find (or create) an item you can select it and add it to your meal list. It then adds total carbs. You can also choose portion amounts. As an example screen, I have the following info for the last 2 days: 1/13 3:22 pm Glue 193 mg/dL 1/13 3:49 pm Food 76 Carbs (I'll condense from here) ..... 7:06 pm Gluc 254 ..... 7:18 pm food 75 ..... 9:57 pm food 12 .....11:46 pm gluc 159 .....11:58 pm food 95 1/14 8:49 am gluc 243 ..... 9:10 am food 53 .....12:56 pm gluc 181 ..... 2:25 pm gluc 136 ..... 8:55 pm food 78 All entries can have notes added to them. I can also add meds to the display with the touch of a hotspot. Here I am looking for info and giving it out. =) I can use a microwave quite well and can cook meats without added oils, etc. --- Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). Guest guest
Welcome to all the new members. I have been on this list for about 6 months and have learned a lot. I was diagnosed 15 months ago. At first I thought well it's not cancer. No big deal. Was I ever wrong. After researching the many complications about this disease I have learned it can be very ugly if you don't get it under control. The good news is it can be controlled by diet. My Mom had Alzheimer's. That is a disease in which there is no control. It truly is the long goodbye. In any case, I noticed that Tom is from Iowa. I was raised in Des Moines. And someone else lives in Seattle. I live near there too. Small word. Getting information is the key to handling diabetes, IMHO. Someone recently asked about stress raising bg numbers. I know it does for me. I'm recently had personal problems which sent my bg numbers way up. Now things are under control again. I have to learn to not be so stressed over everything. This is really helping me lower my numbers. I look forward to getting to know all of you a little better. Vicki

Guest guest
Welcoem Betty., Its fine that you joined us. Support persons are always welcome. I am so sorry Ronda is in so much pain. An angioplasty is done through the vein by your groin. They go and open the artery up and I THINK sometimes put a stint in there to keep it open. Its a shame Rondas family doesn't support her. Breast cancer is not the death sentence is was once thought to be. Many ladies have lived a long time and die from something other than the cancer. It will be 13 1/2 yrs for me Nov. 24th. I will keep Ronda, you and your family in my prayers. Please tell her we are thinking about her and praying for her. Guest guest
Hi . I'm Margaret and I live in NJ so depending on where you are in Pa, we may not be that far away. I joined the group about 8 weeks ago when I had a bad mammogram. They sent me back for another mammogram and then while I was there, they did an ultrasound also because it didn't look good. Well, long story short, I still have my steri-strips on my incision so it hasn't been that long ago (9 days ago) that I had a biopsy and it was a fibrous mass. So, as i was told when I joined this list, don't panic until you need to!! ) Good luck. Margaret New Member Hi Everyone:I just joined the group today...My reason for this is: I just had a mammogram done a few days ago ( I am 45)..I had one done as a baseline when I was 35 with it being normal...Since we have moved, I could not obtain the first one to compare...Today (Saturday) I got a letter in the mail from the imaging center that stated it "showed a finding that requires additional imaging studies for a complete evaluation" They want me to schedule an appt. for additional views...Needless to say, I am very upset by this, and don't know what to expect, as I am unfamiliar with the procedures, tests, etc. for breast cancer...I suppose this most likely means that there is some problem and I have a suspicion of cancer...There has been no breast cancer on either side of my family, and I don't have any high risk things such as smoking, taking hormones, etc....My mom just recently passed away though from uterine cancer, so I am still trying to deal with that along with this now upsetting news...I appreciate you all reading this and maybe can offer some help to me...Thanks!PA

Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. They probably will just take more pictures. They can also do an ultrasound if they still aren't sure. Just remember breast cancer is NOT the death sentence it was once thought to be. You can live many years after a diagnosis. Guest guest
Oh, , you're not far at all. We were there last year. Jack Frost. It's less than a 2 hour ride for us. I'm from town, right between Philly and AC. Please keep us informed. I hope it turns out like mine did. They ended up doing a ultrasound guided core biopsy on me and I honestly didn't feel a THING! I watched him insert the needle and wire and that's not like me at all! I didn't feel anything. THe IV was a pain because I'm not a good IV person but the test itself was a breeze. It helped that my dr. was a little cutie too! haha. Good luck and please keep me informed Margaret New Member> > > Hi Everyone:> I just joined the group today...My reason for this is: I just had a > mammogram done a few days ago ( I am 45)..I had one done as a > baseline when I was 35 with it being normal...Since we have moved, I > could not obtain the first one to compare...Today (Saturday) I got a > letter in the mail from the imaging center that stated it "showed a > finding that requires additional imaging studies for a complete > evaluation" They want me to schedule an appt. for additional views...> Needless to say, I am very upset by this, and don't know what to > expect, as I am unfamiliar with the procedures, tests, etc. for > breast cancer...I suppose this most likely means that there is some > problem and I have a suspicion of cancer...There has been no breast > cancer on either side of my family, and I don't have any high risk > things such as smoking, taking hormones, etc....My mom just recently > passed away though from uterine cancer, so I am still trying to deal > with that along with this now upsetting news...I appreciate you all > reading this and maybe can offer some help to me...Thanks!> > PA> > >
Guest guest
Hi , Welcome to the group. I know this is a scary time for you but I am so glad you went for a mammogram. I had my first one at 41 and it saved my life. This happened last April and right now my life is going very well. They want to get a closer look and really can’t tell you what’s going on until they do, so right now is a waiting game. What helped me during this time was to get everything scheduled as soon as possible (push them if you have to) and get as much info from each medical provider as possible. I will be thinking of you and beaming positive thoughts your way. Guest guest
I had my mamogram on August 30th and then the doctor called to say they wanted another mamogram because of 2 abnormalities. I was really scared but then I found this group and I want to tell you they helped me get through the next few weeks until I had the lumps removed and the results came back that everything was OK. I don't have breast cancer but I stayed in the group. We are all here if you need to talk. Think positive. I'll say a prayer that you get good news like I did. Guest guest
Not to worry . It simply means something showed up that does not follow the "normal" pattern of things, and they want to get a better look to try to find out what is happening. It could be any number of things. At this time , if I were you I would not give cancer a second thought because no one has said that there is cancer present. Until that happens it is just research...georgia Thanks so much Georgia, and to everyone else who replied to me...I did not call to get my report anyway today...I just really didn't want to see it, read it, and try to analyze every word of it and get my self all worked up ( I know how I can be, lol!).. So I have just decided to call the women's center tomm morning and schedule for another mammogram.....I will keep you all posted...Thanks again! I just found out this morning that my mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I calleld her on the phone this morning. We were chatting and she let me know that she would be in my town on Friday but wouldn't have a chance to visit with me. She used to live here but about 1-1/2 years ago she moved to the Washington coast to a town called Ocean Shores which is about 2.5 hours drive time from me. Anyway, she said that she was going to be in town to have appointmentments with doctors. She has been diagnosed with breast cancer. I have to be honest and tell you that it just blew me away! My mom is 77 years old. She was born in July 1926. She has always been very active or at least as active as her health would allow. She told me that she hasn't been able to get any straight answers over the phone from doctors so she is coming back here to see a doctor she usually went to. She figures that she will be able to get some information and help from him. A couple of months ago, she had a mammogram and then they called her to have it repeated. She doesn't know much yet other than it is cancer. I am assuming that she has had other tests done besides the mammogram - she hasn't told me. She said she hadn't told me because she didn't want me to worry. She said that she doesn't know if it only needs a lumpectomy or what. She said that if they want to do a removal she will have both breasts done. For a number of years my mom and I were estranged and for a couple of those years we didn't even talk at all! Then we started mending some fences and she moved. But we have continued to talk - thank goodness for free long distance on cell phones! I try to call her every couple of days. I will step that up and make sure that she knows I care. There are four of us kids. I have an older sister and two older brothers. My sister is the one who is picking her up and bringing her to town to see the dr and will take her back after. The younger of the two brothers is useless - I've not had any contact with him for some time due to some reasons. The older of the two brothers lives in Portland, Oregon but doesn't have a car. I am hoping that he will be able to write her and at least give her a call once in awhile. I don't know if she even plans to say anything to either brother. I'm so sorry to go on like this. I am still in shock. I plan to spend a lot of time here and at breast cancer web sites. Thanks so much for letting me be a member. Guest guest
Hello, I just joined this users group. I am 33 years old and only discovered last week that my mom has BPD. I suddenly feel better having a name for her dysfunction. It seems a little easier to explain to people now. I am curious how and when other members found out they had a borderline parent. Guest guest
Welcome to the group. I am new here, as well. I started going to therapy for anxiety and depression. After a while in therapy my therapist suggested that my mom may have BPD. We went through the list and it seems she fits the list. I am 31. Since going to therapy I have significantly improved in the depression/anxiety area. I am also working in self-esteem and co-dependency issues right now. I tend to believe that people don't love/like me and that if someone does love me it will be taken away. That I can mess up and then my husband won't love me anymore, for example. That is just a really brief synopsis of where I am right now.
