It was shocking to read about the husband of a HIV-positive woman forced to

deliver their baby, after doctors refused to help ( " Hospital 'delivers' a

shocker " Gulf News, June 30).

It was also thought provoking. This issue needs to be considered and how we can

address such ignorance.

There should be an awareness programme in India so that the spread of HIV can be

contained.

The ignorance of doctors, who denied proper treatment due to fear needs to be

addressed. If qualified professionals refuse these people, where do they go?

Dear Forum,

It is a sad happening.Maybe the doctors own values conflicting with

patients.Resourses are scarce and in the absence of the clear and

explicit criteria, the choice of treatment rest on the judgement of

the individual clinician. This also creates a confusion among doctors

to fix the priority.

The doctor-patient relation is a complementary one.The doctors should

be considerate enough to avoid such unfortunate incidents.Patients

should be active, cooperative and open during the whole treatment

procedures. The first encounter between the doctor and patient is very

important to establish rapport. In the present scenario, the

relationship between the doctor and patient is shared,as there are

nurses, health visitors, counsellors and other doctors also in the

system. However,it is always true, that doctors should never forget the

professional ethics. Before giving any judgement one should understand

the situation in totality.

All the best,
