I know how overwhelmed you must be, but I promise it will not take long for you to find out what you can and cannot eat. Until you meet with your educator and start testing, I would recommend cutting back on the starchy foods - white rice, white potatoes, pasta, white bread, etc and of course, soft drinks and desserts. Most other foods can be eaten in moderation. If you are not already exercising, you may want to ask your doctor about an exercise program. Sometimes, even a 10 minute walk after eating will help to lower blood glucose (bg's). Please ask any questions you may have. Eunice
Guest guest
A good start is to try to eat food that is as unrefined as possible - for instance, multigrain bread rather than white, real fruit rather than fruit juice. Try to add more vegetables to your meals. Go out for a walk every day for 1/2 hour or more. Be good to yourself and get enough sleep! Take care, Deanna I guess my question is should I be doing anything now? Doug

I changed my diet to chicken thighs, skinless, set on top a bed of spinach and broccoli with sugar free red wine vinaigrette dressing. I bought low carb bread and had tuna fish sandwiches with minced garlic and celery held together with a tablespoon of fat free mayo. Mornings consisted of oatmeal or egg, now I use egg-free stuff, on a piece of toast. And last of all EXERCISE. Face it, this thing really woke me up. What I have found in the 5 weeks, I was eating less than I should, but I did lose weight. I did get my blood glucose under control and have expanded my meals, but it's a day to day thing. I have discovered rice brings my bg's up, but a small red potato, no real problems. 1/2 Apple or 1/2 Banana with each meal are ok for me, Strawberries, another baddie, so I guess each body is different. What I have learned in the diabetes class, eat each meal with roughage, (spinach, cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, anything with fiber), cut your protein portion down to 2oz maybe 3oz per meal, eggs count as 1oz so does cheese. Have some carbs with each meal also, I usually have a slice of low carb bread or tortilla (low card also), 1/2 glass, 4oz - 5oz, of non-fat milk and 1/2 fruit. Each item you eat does break down to glucose in your body, some faster than others, but fiber slows the glucose breakdown. Carbohydrates are bad for you for they break down to glucose real fast. You are doing the correct thing by getting reading the labels. Just remember also look at the serving numbers and divide the numbers by the serving numbers, i.e.. 3 servings equal 15 carbohydrates, that means 1 serving equals 5 carbohydrates. Welcome aboard. Guest guest
Hi Doug, I am a newbie too. I was diagnosed 3 months ago. I was scared about what to eat, when, how. My doctor put me on Avandia and Glucophage. I have lost 22 pounds since with help of my husband and my 2 boys. The boys always walk with me. My first reading at the doc's office was 264. I try to vary my diet with vegies and whole grain bread I like rye my boys don't. My advise to you is get support from family, friends and online groups, eat wisely, exercise, and see your doctor. God bless and good control. purekoolkat

Eat lots of lean meat, eggs, seafood, and dairy. > > You are right. Every person is different and what works for one will not necessarily work for another. My doctor told me that diabetes isn't like the flu where the symptoms and problems are all pretty much predictable. He said diabetes is an indication that many things are going wrong in your body and depending on how severe your diabetes is and how long it has gone untreated, the diet you need to be on can vary greatly from person to person. My diabetes educator said a lot of the same things as the person who said no juice... whole foods instead of processed foods, no white rice, potatoes or bread... and try to eat whole grains and brown rice and sweet potatoes. The one thing they REALLY emphasized though was to eat very small meals. For me, that is the key. If I will eat a small amount and then exercise, I do so much better. Even a large amount of veggies and protein without any carbs can spike my numbers... so I keep my proteinat about 1-2 oz at a meal... and try to work in 3 snacks. If I am doing fine, I have a fruit but if my bg's drop or I am feeling VERY hungry or weak, I will have a little protein even with that snack... like peanut butter. So we are all different. My doctor and diabetes educator both are against a high protein, low carb diet for diabetics because they feel it will cause long term kidney damage down the road. However, I have learned from this list that diabetes cannot be put in a box so easily and that we sometimes have to try many things out to see what works for us individually. I used to be adamantly against the Atkins Diet but the longer I go as a diabetic, the more I see that I don't have all the answers and am learning that we need to be supportive of each other as we make our own personal decisions about how to get better. Guest guest
Each person is unique, and I would listen to what the educator and/or nurse says, BUT this has worked for me: 1. Cut out white bread, potatoes, white pasta, and white rice. Eat some whole wheat bread and pasta and brown rice. 2. Eat lots of lean meat, eggs, seafood, and dairy. 3. Eat lots of vegetables, but go sparingly on root vegetables and winter squash. 4. Avoid processed fruit and fruit juice, but eat some whole fruit, especially berries. 5. Get as much exercise as you can. Try working it into your daily routine. (For example, when going on an errand ask yourself if you could walk or ride your bicycle; if it is possible, do so.) Guest guest
Mel, I'm 21 & last year when I was 19, I found a lump in my left breast & had to have surgery to have it removed & thankfully it was benign, but I know exactly what you're going through about being scared. Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group. You did the right thing by going to the doctor right away. I am glad he is having it checked further. Try to remember that IF its breast cancer that breast cancer is NOT the death sentence it was once thought to be. The youngest person I have ever heard of with breast cancer was 18. I had a modified radical mastectomy May 1990 and I am doing fine. There are ladies here that are past 13yrs. Early detection is the key and it seems to me that IF there is any cancer it will be caught in the early stages. You will be in my prayers and please keep us posted. Guest guest
Kerri, Yes, I've told my youth pastor about this as well as my friends (youth group) we're all pretty close so I felt comfortable telling them. We plan on setting apart a time to pray for this next week. I'm from San , TX. My dad's military so the good part about it is I am being treated at BAMC ( Army Medical Center) and the army covers all of the expenses, so that's a little stress taken off of my parents. We're going to Jekyll Island Georgia. The beach down there is really pretty and so is the island, so I'm pretty sure we'll have a good time! How did you handle the stress of not knowing if your lump was cancerous or not???? Hope to hear from you soon! MEL > > > > Hey everyone, I'm new here. Guest guest
I just left it up to God & prayed a lot about it. I had first found the lump in January & got it checked out and my doctor had me get a ultrasound. She called me a week later & said everything was fine & to have a follow-up ultrasound in 3 months & then I had it & I got home from class the week after I had the 3 month follow-up sonogram to find a message on my machine from my doctor asking me to call her back and when I called her back she said that it looks like it could be benign BUT..... because my mom had been diagnosed with breast cancer just a year before, she wanted me to see the surgeon. If you want to read my journal, go to www.swdconsulting.com/cg to read more about my scare and how I dealt with my mom going through her treatment > Kerri, >      Yes, I've told my youth pastor about this as well as my friends > (youth group) we're all pretty close so I felt comfortable telling > them. Guest guest
Thank you, Doris. My sister has done pretty good so far. She gets a bit overwhelmed sometimes and I have told her that is to be expected. She comes from strong stock and I know she will do just fine with all of this. When I finally got her to admit to herself and to me that she had cancer it was a turning point fro her. She has told her doctors do what you have to because I want to be around to see all of my grand kids walk down the aisle. They said they got all of the cancer, the chemo is a preventative. She will have 6 treatments 3 weeks apart. Just amother bump in the road. Hugs, PS :Thank you for the site info. Several people have told me about it ,they just didn't have the name right. Guest guest
Sheri, Your sister is indeed fortunate to have you. I don't know what to tell you about getting her children to get involved...it seems that " wanting to be involved " takes an effort on the part of so many and they may or may not decide to take a part in her recovery. I am glad you joined this group. I did not have a radical mastectomy...mine was modified so I am sure she has more recovery time facing her than I did. Ask any questions you want answered...we will do our best to answer them...not all of us have had the same type of b.c. so someone in our group will probably know the answers to your questins...if not, we may know where you can get help. I would suggest that you go to www.komen.org for a lot of information. Guest guest
Hello My mom was diagnosed on Sept 4th that she had cancer and had a radical mastectomy Sept 29th She had complications so we had to readmit her to hospital sept 13 and she got out that Friday. I have 3 brothers and 1 sister and no one has helped me at all so I know how it feels. I guess people are afraid and some just don't help out for what ever reason. I have had the most difficult time myself. We cant make people do what they wont but don't get burned out like I have, I broke down the other day from exhaustion. You have to look after you to.Our patients can do some thing for themselves. No hard work but they need to be up and about in the house. mom cooks simple meals now because she wants to but no housework........ I am here for you.I just joined her about a week ago and there are some of the best people you will ever meet here. Keep praying and we will pray for you too. Guest guest
Hi Sheri and welcome. I am glad you joined the group. We will do everything we can to help you and Sandy. I had a mastectomy May 1990 for infitratring ductal carcinoma. I had 6 months of chemo, no radiation and no reconstruction and had 1 bad lymph node out of 23. You are doing the best thing you can by being there for your sister. Just being with her and listening is a big help to the patient. Also if you can bring her some dinners she can make little servings out of and freeze for the days she might not be feeling well I know thats a big help, helping run errands, some housework, going to the dr with her is great. Breast cancer is not the death sentence it was once thought to be. It will be 13 1/2 yrs for me next month and there are ladies here that are farther along than I am. As far as the kids go I don't know what to tell you. If her son is like that he may cause her more aggravation if he is around. Please tell her I will keep her in my prayers and feel free to ask any questions and we will do our best to answer them or point you in the right direction. Guest guest
nne, Thank you so much for the words of encouragement. I know Sandy will get through this with flying colors. I will do what I can to help her. What you said about her son is very true..more aggravation than it is worth. Hopefully with time he will come around and do what is right by his Mom. This has been a terrible year for my family. It started in March with my mother-in-law passing away. In April my brother had the front right lobe of his lung removed. It wasn't cancer. It was a fungus from his line of work (plumber) and could have turned to cancer eventually. In May my dad (87) had surgery on his intestines. They found Crohn's disease. I was in FL for 7 weeks for that. Also found out this week dad needs another surgery because he has a hernia on his incision. Then in Sept. Sandy found out about her cancer. The greatest thing for this year is on Oct. 4th I became a Gramma for the first time to a beautiful baby boy named Cameron. Thank God I have such an understanding husband because I figured out that I have been away from home for at least 31/2 months so far this year. I have basically grounded myself. I have let everyone know that unless it is life or death I am staying home. I just can't go anymore. I am under doctors care for major depression and other problems but my reserve of inner strength has been depleted. My counselor told me yesterday to tell anyone that asks to tell them I can't go anywhere..doctors orders. I love that man. Sorry to babble on this way. I guess I am just over whelmed with all the happening of this year and there is more but I won't get into that. Thanks for listening and thank you for the support. Hugs, PS: Congratulations on your doing so well. Stories like yours makes this bump in the road a little easier to see the other side. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, I guess we are sort of in the same boat. Your mother, my sister. But for many years my sister was like a second Mom to me. She's 16 years older than I am. I was an aunt at 4. Her kids and I grew up together. I used to spend summers with her. This is actually the first time in our lives we have lived in the same state and all calls are local. LOL I told her recently that it took me awhile, many years to figure out she was just my sister and she really couldn't tell me what to do anymore. It turns out that I am the strong one of the bunch but that's OK. We have lost 2 brothers so now it is 1 brother 1 sister and me. I think our brother is in denial on all fronts. He has a hard time dealing with our parents age and their problems. He lives 3 hours from them. I live 8 but it is me that does the traveling. When Mom called to tell me that dad had to have another surgery she was very adamant that I would not be there. She called my brother and he said he would come up for 3-4 days but he is already complaining about it but not to our parents. I just hope he does the right thing. I keep hoping that if I stay away from my sisters that her kids will pitch in more. Her daughter has done pretty good so far but 2 days after having her mastectomy we were at her daughters house because she was cooking for everyone. Sandy should have been at home, resting but didn't want to let her kids down. she paid the price for the next couple of days. Supper should have been brought to her and the kids should have gone to her house. I do hope and pray they come around and do right by their Mom. I just can't do it all. Thanks for listening. Hugs PS: Take care of yourself. Sheri

Guest guest
I know what you mean about it all.I was suffering from major depression 2 and 3 years ago but with a great doc and medicine it helped but I am falling again, I am depressed. My dad is always sick, he is a 7 years colon cancer survivor with a colostomy but has many health problems but wont do anything about the probs until its too late. he is like a child, he is 78 but is more like 12. My parents live upstairs form me so I am always the one here doing no matter what.I am a single mom of 4; 23,20,15,and 14 and they all still live at home. just keep up the faith and think about you for awhile, this is one of those reasons you have to stop and take care of you.Last sunday I was in the bathroom crying, and shaking and sick to my stomach with stress of trying to do it all by myself.the ladies here made me realize I can only do what i can do and that I have to take care of me too. Ill do anything for my parents but I have to take care of me to or I wont be any good to anyone. hugs, Debbie
