Guest guest
By adding Colace you are just treating just the symptom (constipation) and not the root of the problem which seems to be something wrong in his digestive. Usually these kids have either been on antibiotics (just one round is enough set the system outa balance) or the digestive has been injured by vaccines To correct gut dysbiosis you need to 1 eliminate yeast overgrowth 2 reestablish good bacteria 3 supplement with missing enzymes Garlic (colic brand is VERY good) grapefruitseed extract (excellent for whatever ails ya) and the fatty acid 'Caprilic' are some things that will help kill off overgrowth. http://www.kyolic.com/ http://www.nutriteam.com/index2.html adding probiotics will help reestablish the 'good' bacteria...PB8 is the brand we use, but look for one containing 'billions' of lacto and bafido bacteria. http://nutritionnow.com/PB8.htm other things that aid digestion are by supplementing with the enzymes necessary for digestion of the fats, carbs, and prot. Kirkman labs has a good digestive enzyme as does enymatic theropy (man do I feel like a broken record but you can only lead a horse to water) from Dr. Balch (prescription to nutritional healing) Colace is a form of laxative that works by softening fecal mater...it works in the liver and may cause liver damage and drug toxicity. the only safe laxatives are bulk forming.... bran psyllium husks flaxseed oil (with lignians) will also aid digestion (and helps with yeast overgrowth) must have adequate fluids and most dr.s have these kids needlessly dehydrated larger amounts of Magnesium, and C cause dare Barb....s mom On Thu, 17 Jan 2002 23:29:56 -0600 heppner1@... writes: I am having the same problems with my son right now - he started thediet on June 14/01. Mike is alsohaving trouble peeing but we started the colace yesterday and that isslowing taking care of the peeing problem as well for him. YAY! Thereare many things to try for constipation before going off the diet. Thisgroup has given me many good ideas. We are not planning to keep him onthe colace for long - just until we can get the psyllium husks for him.Hopefully those will work and that will be the end of our problems withconstipation. I have been told that some children do not need to have aBM every day but am not quite sure how many days they can safely go.Mike is also doing much better now that we are reducing the meds.Jenn "The Ketogenic Diet....a realistic treatment option, NOT just a last resort!" Guest guest
Grapefruit seed extract is good - but interferes with some meds so have to be cautious who is taking it. I am aware of the potential problems with the liver from the long term use of colace but since we arent keeping him on it very long (just long enough to get the psyllium husks) the doctor isnt worried about it. Guest guest
She gets 1 Tbsp. of the cal/mag/zinc liquid along with two capsules of magnesium which ends up being 600 mg of each. I tried adding another 150 mg. of mag. in addition to this yesterday but so far no results. Guest guest
This sounds good Jeni. Can I do this online or do you have a phone number? I'm willing to try anything to get her regular again! Guest guest
Well I don't think I have heard of anybody yet for whom the mag didn't work. My understanding is that as long as she doesn't get tummy cramps or diahrea you can keep upping it til you get results. Has MOM worked for you in the past? Just wondering cuz thats whats in there. Let us know how it goes (or doesn't!) Wes Moreland wrote: She gets 1 Tbsp. of the cal/mag/zinc liquid along with two capsules of magnesium which ends up being 600 mg of each. Wes Moreland wrote: Rebekah has been on the diet since July, 2001, going into our seventh month. She is doing really good with meds dropped to half of what they were. However, she is still not having any BM's on her own. I am worried that this will cause a permanent lazy bowel. I have tried most everything and am at a loss. It would be so sad to have to go off of the diet because of this! If anyone has had any experience with this please help me out. My worry is that she will go off the diet and she won't be able to resume bowel movements normally. Do we continue the diet or not? We have been giving her an enema weekly to clean her out for fear of having a blockage. Last week her stool was soft and no reason why she couldn't have gotten rid of it herself. I am presently giving her 1:1 Cal/Mag. and still no results on her own. Guest guest
Those suffering from constipation may be neglecting the obvious....if you incorporate your diet with lots of (60%) raw fruits, juices, and vegetables, I would bet big money that your constipation would go away.... Guest guest
I eat a lot more veggies & fruits than the average person needs and I still have the " problem. " My digestive system is so strange. I still think it is a combination of PLS & meds!!! Before PLS I had the opposite " problem " & that wasn't any fun either! Since my colonoscopy I now have a prescription laxative & Milk of Magnesia to go with it. I don't take them every day. Just when I'm in trouble!!!
