Guest guest
Dear All, I am a student on the Control of Infectious Diseases Masters Course at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This is a multi-disciplinary course that provides training for those who wish to work on disease control programmes and the improvement of international health. As part of the MSc course I will be undertaking a Summer Project, which involves working with an established control programme. The Project takes place in July and August each year for up to 10 weeks. The last two weeks are usually taken up with writing a Project Report, which is assessed by the internal and external examiners but otherwise may be kept confidential. A tutor or another member of staff with a specialist interest in the Project assists the student: the London School has many highly qualified staff with much relevant experience. Students have to finance their own Projects, though LSHTM pays for insurance and any vaccinations required and also often contributes to the cost of airfares. The collaborating institution suggests a Project assignment or develops a Project with the student, ensures that there is a suitable local adviser for the student and advises on low-cost accommodation and subsistence. Only a student who is judged by both the LSHTM staff and the collaborating institution to have suitable experience and skills (e.g. languages) will be considered for a particular Project. For Projects involving patients or confidential data local as well as LSHTM ethical committee approval must be obtained For my Summer Project I want to look at HIV/AIDS educational programmes in and around Delhi that are targeted at young people and find out from the young people through qualitative research e.g. questionnaires and perhaps short interviews how the programmes are perceived at community level and what impact these programmes are having on their behaviour. I am fascinated at how people's behaviours and cultural beliefs impact upon their behaviour and believe that understanding this underpins any successful intervention program. I am also interested in the role of stigma and in the gap between what is intended at implementation and how these programmes are perceived by the people at whom they are aimed. Is there anyone who is involved in this kind of work in and around Delhi or who knows anyone who may be interested in assisting me? Any help would be very greatly appreciated!
