Kin abandon HIV patient at burial ground

Staff Reporter

NAMAKKAL: A HIV/AIDS patient, who was reportedly abandoned by his

family and left to live in a thatched shed near the burial ground at

Paramathivelur near here, was admitted to the Namakkal Government

Hospital on Thursday.

Sanitary worker

According to official sources, the male patient, a sanitary worker,

tested positive for HIV, when his relatives brought him for treatment

after he fell ill. Subsequently, his relatives left him in a thatched

shed near the burial ground a few days ago.

Parents' refusal

Following information from the public, revenue and health officials

asked the patient's relatives to take care of him. But they refused.

Hence, the health officials admitted him in the Namakkal GH for

treatment.

Nammakkal is a high prevalence distt for HIV/AIDS. The abandonment of sanitory

worker by his family indicates that we still are lagging far behind in awareness

creation.

This call on immediate response by state aids socity as well as need to

strengthening integated counselling and testing centres.
