Thanks ,

I fully expect the baby to spend most of the time in my bed (which is

also a futon on the floor). I played around with the idea of getting

a kids size futon for next to ours when the baby gets big enough, but

I wasn't so sure about multiple mattresses - so that is one of the

reasons I got a king mattress instead of the queen I was originally

looking at. The crib was a hand me down and I'm sure it'll be handy

sometime, but it certainly wasn't *my* main plan. :) I'm still

trying to break my SO into the idea of breastfeeding past 1 year...

he's warming up to 2 years but thinks 3 might detriment the baby

because it'll be too attached to me. We'll get there!

Thanks for the polish/cleaning recommendations!

Hey Lana,

I breastfed both my babies who are now 29 and 19 but you 'MAY' be surprised

if they wean sooner than you think. My son weaned himself at 13 months and

my daughter weaned herself at 9 months. But if you let nature take it's

place, the baby will wean when it wants so you might get one that weans

longer and maybe not!

Allyn,

I saw Kathy Dettwyler speak not too long ago

). She did some research on breastfeeding in non-human primates and

asked the question (my wording): If humans weren't subjected to

sociocultural norms, how long would human basic biology dictate

breastfeeding to last?

One of the first things that popped out was that age of weaning was

often 6 times the length of gestation - putting (unconstrained) human

weaning to be potentially around 4.5 yrs. Another factor that popped

out was that age of weaning often correlated with the emergence of

first permanent molars - putting (unconstrained) human weaning to be

potentially as late as 6 yrs.

Body size also has a large factor in impacting the age of weaning.

In general, there is sufficient variation in these biological

correlates that she found that a natural unconstrained age of weaning

in humans should range between 2.5 and 7 yrs. But see

Lana,

If a child weans before 2 1/2 years, it's actually a nursing strike and not

true weaning. There is a huge difference. A strike is temporary and

happens abruptly. True weaning happens very gradually over a period of

weeks or months.

Children under 2 1/2 strike for various reasons, mostly illness, teething,

and being upset over something.
