Jenn,

Does he like soup? You can make soups with water and he'd

be getting extra fluid. There is a recipe in the files for

chicken soup.

Sorry if this is silly, but did you sweeten the tea? My

daughter only likes it if it is sweetened. You can also try

flavored fruit water by Glaceau.

Mike loves soup - but he does tire of it so I usually only use it twice

a week - when I figure he needs a boost in liquids. I tried the tea

both ways - sweetened first - then unsweetened. I am going to try

it again.

We use kool-aid (black chery/lemon-lime or the magic twist cherry) and sweeten them with approved sweeteners-I have frozen this in tupperware pop-scile containers or rinsed out freeze-pop containers (the ones that come in a plastic tube). Savanna loves them as they look similar to the ones everyone has. We have even put her kool-aid in a plastic soda bottle so it's like the rest.

Will he chew on ice chips? Better than nothing. How about a popsicle, w/

melted jello, seltzer, cream and oil? Combine all and freeze in a popsicle

mold, looks like the real thing....

Hot cocoa? Made w/ cream, water, unsweetened chocolate and sweetener?

Just another thought....

It freezes well. I used to melt the jello in the microwave. Add seltzer and mix. Add cream and oil and mix, and pour fast into the molds. I think the cream separates more from the seltzer, or something wierd...but not too bad. Haven't made them in years. You only need a tiny bit of oil, jello and cream...I think I used to make a 50 calorie snack at 4:0 ratio, or something like that. They can be for snack or dessert. Best part about dessert is that it cuts some fat out of the meal. Best of luck.

This is something I will definitely try. Pre-diet he loved cream-sicles. Does the oil seperate or freeze well with the other stuff? Jenn swoyer wrote: Will he chew on ice chips? Better than nothing. I think I would not wait for your urologist appt/referral. If I were in your shoes I'd get him seen by a doctor, ASAP. It isn't normal for a young child to go 48 hours w/out peeing. You need to check dehydration and if he is dehydrated, then get an IV into him and rehydrate. Maybe it will kickstart him. Is he in pain? If I called my ER doc and told her that Jake had been dry for 2 days she'd have my A#$)()#U in there! Guaranteed. What does your pediatrician say?

I have talked to our GP here - and to the neuro and neurology nurse at

the hospital and they know the situation. They have all checked Mike

over well and do not find him dehydrated. After not peeing for 48

hrs - he peed twice in 18 hrs and now nothing again for 36 hrs (so far)

I am worried about this pattern. We have resumed the colace and hopefully

things will move so to speak and he will start to have BM's and regular

urine output in a day or two. If he is still like this on friday

I will phone the GP in the am and get him looked at.

What are the signs of dehydration? Mike's skin isnt dry and the

lining of his mouth is moist. What else do I need to look for.

Dry lips, no wet diapers, lack of urination, flushed cheeks, panting????????

This just sounds so strange to me, I can't imagine. How about....does the urologist have a nurse you could talk to?

If he's not dehydrated, how could he not be having to go? It doesn't make sense.

To check for dehydration, pinch an inch or two of skin on his arm. If when you release the skin you see that the skin holds some lines that look like wrinkles, then he is dehydrated. Try it on yourself to see what normal looks like.

Perhaps you could try ice chips or cubes and see if he will take some fluid that way. I don't like to threaten Danny, but I did once resort to telling him that if he did not drink I was going to take him to the hospital and have him put on an IV - that straightened him out very quickly.

His lips are a bit dry - but that usually happens to him in the winter -

they are not really really dry, no flushed cheeks, no panting. He peed

again today so things are doing a bit better since we started up the

colace again even tho he didnt have a BM yet.

I was wondering if it has something to do with electrolytes and sodium -

we had this tested a month ago and things were fine but I still think

there is something to this as he pees more when he gets more

sodium/salt.

I dont even know who the urologist is yet. I am going to call the GP

today and see if they have any idea as to when I will get an appt or if

they have a number I can call and the name of who they refered Mike to.

Thanks

I threatened Mike with that as well - he got up and ran for his boots he

was ready to go to the hospital. I think he is better at reverse

psychology than I am LOL He loves the play rooms at the hospital and

all the attention he gets from the nurses but after being there a day he

is ready to come home I think he just doesnt remember the " bad " parts

like the IV etc..

How about freezing diluted crystal lite in popsicle shapes with plastic

sticks to hold onto? Would be fun.

Does the GP think that it's okay that he is not peeing? Not concerned?

Nope he isnt too concerned - they all think it is due to the fact that

his fluids are being restricted. He isnt drinking the total he can

drink - altho I have finally gotten him close to that number. And

he is back to peeing once a day again (had a bit of a scare a while ago)

I have checked for all the signs of dehydration and the only one is that

he isnt peeing regularly. The lining of his mouth is moist, his skin

is not wrinkly when pinched, lips are a bit dry but he has always had a

problem with licking his lips so they are always dry in winter.

How much fluid is he drinking a day? And how big is he?

When Jake began the diet, he was about 27lbs. The hospital told me that anything under 500cc of fluid a day would cause dehydration. Now he's allotted about 1100 per day, I'd say he actually drinks about 700-800. With this small amount, he still goes to the bathroom several times a day, and he now weighs about 44lbs. So, I would say that the amount is also restricted...yet he's peeing.

I don't know why I'm so stuck on this .... but I am. It just does not sound right to me that a child would only go once every 1 or 2 days....something has got to be going on.

Right now he is 40lbs and his allotted fluid amount is 1390mls - he drinks

approx 800mls a day (more if he gets soup that day) tho sometimes a little

less but we have at least been keeping him above 600mls ( this wasnt the

case earlier in the diet but he was still peeing 3-4 times a day when only

taking in 400mls) I too think something is going on and my GP - altho

I love him he is a super super doc - isnt informed enough about this and

just blames it on the diet. From the responses I am getting from

this list - this is NOT the norm on this diet. I will be phoning

the GP first thing Monday morning and requesting the phone number and name

of the urologist he wants to send my son to. I am going to phone

and talk to them and request that I get an appt ASAP as this has been going

on since Sept 28 ( only then he was still peeing twice a day but still

down from the 3-4 times a day.)

Thanks to everyone for all your help!

I totally agree. This is not the diet -- it's gotta

be something else. . .unless it's something related to

kidney stones? FYI, my neuro told me that there are a

few myths about the keto diet. . .one was that fluids

needed to be restricted. That was a biggee with me

because we live in Arizona and it could be deadly to

restrict fluids around here. They did give me a fluid

number as a guideline, but it was huge, even more than

drinks typically, which is quite a bit (although

she drank more pre-diet because the options were more

appealing to her!).-D

Before we began this diet - Mike loved his water - that is the first thing

he would ask for when he was thirsty and still what he gets most of his

fluid from - just plain water. He has never really liked pop and

he can still have his koolaid but doesnt seem to want it too much.

I have had him checked for kidney stones - urine test or blood test I cant

remember which - how accurate are these?

He did also seem to want to drink more during the summer and does drink

more when he is more active however he doesnt really pee that much more

when he drinks more - maybe more volume but not more times during one day.
