Guest guest
They dont come in regular size. Here are instructions to wrap it yourself. MATTRESS-WRAPPING INSTRUCTIONS FOR CO-SLEEPING by Dr. Jim Sprott Thank you for your inquiry regarding mattress-wrapping for adults' mattresses for the purpose of co-sleeping (bedsharing) with a baby. For instructions on how to wrap adults' mattresses for cot death prevention (crib death prevention), see the information below. However, I would stress the following points: 1. I strongly recommend that you do not co-sleep (bedshare) with your baby. While the instructions set out below ensure that the mattress and certain bedding items comply with my specifications for cot death prevention, there remains a serious cot death risk posed by pillows and also the risk of suffocation through overlaying of the baby. 2. A baby is much safer sleeping in his/her own cot (crib). Numerous studies have shown that co-sleeping is a cot death risk factor. This is graphically illustrated in New Zealand, where Europeans generally do not co-sleep with their babies but the Polynesian ethnic groups (Maori and Pacific Islanders) frequently do. The Pacific Island cot death rate is double the European rate, and the Maori cot death rate is seven times the European rate. 3. If you choose to wrap adults' mattresses in accordance with the instructions set out below, you MUST ensure that you use the specified type of plastic. Some plastics can result in cot death. 4. Furthermore, you must ensure that you follow the instructions for beddding to be used on top of a wrapped mattresses. No bedding options apply. 5. As you will see below, the plastic which you use for mattress-wrapping must be clear (i.e. colourless) polythene (polyethylene) sheeting, with a thickness of not less than 125 microns (5mils). 6. A lay person cannot tell whether a particular plastic sheeting is polythene and should not rely on a retailer's statements regarding the identity of plastic. I provide a free analytical testing service for parents who wish to make mattress wraps (I am an industrial chemist), to ensure that the plastic which parents propose to use is polythene and is sufficiently thick to avoid suffocation risk. 7. If you would like to post to me a small sample of plastic for testing (e.g. 3 " x 3 " ), I shall test it and send you an analytical report (free of charge). My address is: Dr T J Sprott 10 Combes Road Remuera Auckland 5 NEW ZEALAND 8. However, I would stress again that I do not support co-sleeping. Many cot deaths have occurred in parents' beds. I hope that you will choose to have your baby sleep in his/her own cot. This cot can be in your bedroom and can be positioned close to your bed if you wish. HOW TO WRAP A MATTRESS FOR COT/CRIB DEATH PREVENTION: The advice to wrap mattresses applies to every mattress on which a baby sleeps (except a BabeSafe mattress) and includes: adults' mattresses; mattresses of other children; and all mattresses made of or containing natural products such as sheepfleeces, goatskins, kapok, tree bark, coconut fibre, etc. The most convenient way to wrap a baby's mattress is by means of a BabeSafe mattress cover. BabeSafe covers are available in various sizes for bassinet and cot mattresses. To wrap larger mattresses, parents can purchase polythene (polyethylene) sheeting and make their own mattress wraps. The following instructions apply: 1. Use thick, clear (not coloured) polythene (polyethylene) sheeting. The thickness of the polythene must be at least 125 microns (5mils). DO NOT USE PVC (polyvinyl chloride) for wrapping mattresses. 2. Place the polythene over the top of the mattress and down the ends and sides, and then secure it firmly beneath the mattress with strong adhesive tape. 3. The polythene should not be airtight on the underside of the mattress. It MUST be airtight on the top and sides of the mattress. 4. It is imperative to use the correct bedding with a BabeSafe mattress or BabeSafe mattress cover or polythene-covered mattress: (a) On top of the polythene place a pure cotton underblanket and tuck this in securely. ( Then make the bed using sheets and pure woollen or pure cotton overblanket/s. © DO NOT USE any of the following bedding items: * Sheepskin * Sheepfleece underlay * Any underblanket which is not made of pure cotton * Any form of moisture-resistant mattress protector * Any acrylic blanket * Any blanket containing polyester * Sleeping bag * Duvet 6. Proprietary mattress covers should not be used unless they carry the Campaign Against Cot Death logo or are accompanied by a certificate of analysis showing that they contain no detectable phosphorus, arsenic or antimony (lower limit of detection 0.001% = 10mg/kg = 10ppm). [ ] mattress covers Does anyone know where I can find mattress covers like those at www.criblife.com, except for regular size? My girls are in regular beds now, but have major metal issues. Guest guest
Okay, so I'm looking at mattress covers and there are just so many! I'm finally finding ones that are cotton top, but then I have a choice of the waterproof material... Am I right in the assumption that the PUL (polyurethane laminate) is less toxic than vinyl? Is there anything better than PUL? Thanks! Lana > In the short run, you could get a mattress cover, you're going to need one > with a baby. Guest guest
you could get a wool mattress cover/topper. we have one that is very thin and wonderful. wool is naturally antibacterial and can absorb up to 3 times it's weight in liquids--anything spilled on our bed does not go through to the mattress. it's a very natural alternative for your bed. you can also get them for kids' beds. i used wool diaper covers on my son and loved them! amanda >Okay, so I'm looking at mattress covers and there are just so many! >I'm finally finding ones that are cotton top, but then I have a choice >of the waterproof material... . Guest guest
Doesn't it itch? I can't even wear wool sweaters without at least a t-shirt and a long sleeved shirt underneath. Guest guest
i can't remember where we got ours, but i found this site and this pad is similar to what we have. they call it a moisture barrier. to answer one of the other questions: no it is not itchy. it is between the mattress and sheet and i can't even tell it's there. wool is supposed to help regulate body temperature, too, so it can keep you warm in winter and cool in summer. i totally agree also with the person who said she loves her child's LANA blanket! i used the LANA wool diaper covers and they are divinely soft! http://www.theorganicmattressstore.com/moisture-pads.html amanda >Where do you find them? . Guest guest
Thank you! =) I use a mattress protector now but it has plastic in it I'm pretty sure. It goes under the sheet. Anyone know where to find affordable organic sheets and other bedding? Guest guest
Depends on the wool. Lana wool is awesome so is merino wool. They are so soft, comparing them and what i think of as more common wool, is like comparing line dried towels to silk > > > > you could get a wool mattress cover/topper. we have one that is
Guest guest
I have a cover on it that cost me $40. My hub wants to cover it in plastic, so we will see how that goes. I would personally like to get an air mattress. I think it would be easier to clean under/around. I wouldnt serve a " mitetini " , sounds awful. Up here you would prob want an apple hot toddy....just like a hot toddy, but with apple cider...mmmm soooo good. > > > > > > Chasity > > > I really believe in the esp line... > > > I also have had experience with Trishas generosity. Guest guest
the mitetini would kill the little bastards while we danced the night away! I just bought a queen size elevated(2 humps) air mattress from walmart for 40 dollars...had to buy a separate pump. They have one in the sheet section that has a built in pump...I believe the queen was 50 dollars. The one i bought, i got out of the camping section and it's very comfortable.> > > >> > > > Chasity> > > > I really believe in the esp line...> > > > I also have had experience with Trishas generosity. Guest guest
Sounds good Chas, although i would rather be somewhere warm with a margarita in my hand, and my toes in the sand, and nobody asking me to do sh*t. lol. Thanks for the info, we looked at walmart today (wrong section) We only saw a double that was $99. I figured it would be too expensive to go that route. But i may be able to swing $40. Good to know that it is comfortable too. I have slept on a few air mattresses that werent comfortable at all. If you decide to get the ESP call me, i will send you my number, hell call me anyways. lol. love ya girl > > > > > > > > > > Chasity > > > > > I really believe in the esp line... > > > > > I also have had experience with Trishas generosity. You need something like this: http://www.offgassing-mattress-wraps.com/mattress-wraps.htm > and also if polypropylene is safe? I have mixed feelings about this. If it was food-grade, and we're talking about food storage of non-acidic foods that are not hot, then yes, it is safe. But this is not food-grade, so they can potentially contain other chemicals. But I do have allergies, and these work pretty good, so I use them for pillow cases. I know there are better ones out there for allergies - I just don't feel like spending a lot on them. > Thanks. > -Max. >
Guest guest
Hey Torpedo.... I hear you loud and clear. Being so tired and worn out and trying to do the things that will make things easier or better is so very hard. And inevitably things do seem to go wrong or if they go right, they only seem to do so after a gigantic struggle. I have had another Horrible Night and am not free of this thing yet despite all my efforts. Awake all night again and at 10am the Horrible Night continues. It seems unrelenting at times. But I do not give up and keep looking for answers and asking everyone I can think of to try and help. I always say to these people: look, this is not just about me, there are over 200 other people just like me who really desperately need help, some of them have been living with this for years. Please help. And if that person that I ask says that they cannot help or will not look at the facts, I move on to the next person. I will NOT give up and I will NOT stop asking for help until some person comes along who can see and act. To some of those people who have called themselves my friend, who would not look, would not come to my house and see for themselves, who would not listen. I have given a parachute letter: " Good friends are like parachutes; if they're not there the first time you need them chances you won't be needing them again. I will deal with the professional people later, in a manner befitting their status in the world of work. Perhaps many of us will do that when we have some answers and some concrete data. But WE who are living with this are all here together, and listening and supporting each other and trying hard to find answers. We WILL figure this out, so many of us have said that we WILL or die trying. Together we re strong and together we will beat this thing. Collectively, we will get back to a place of health and normality and put our lives back together again. At some point, I'm still gonna have a cuppa coffee and a piece o apple pie at a kitchen table with you, Lynn. The only question is, are you gonna be wantin' ice cream with that, and what flavor? Guest guest
Myrtle, Pardon me if you have already tried this, but have you tried apple cider vinegar to get your alkalinity in check? It cured mine in one day. Get the kind that has the "mother" in it from health stores. Also try diamotaceous earth. Hope this helps. From: Myrtle <myrtle_maui@...>bird mites Sent: Wed, April 14, 2010 12:56:46 PMSubject: mattress covers A lot of people on this site have bought the heaviest gauge painter's plastic at Walmart, and used that to cover the box spring and mattress. They tape shut the opening with lots of duct tape. They have reported that the painter's plastic (heavy gauge) works better than those zippered mattress covers. It's too easy for the bugs to get through the flimsy zippered covers. Maybe your son can help you with that since your husband doesn't want to.Take care, myrtle> >> > Hi Lynn -- If the bugs are crawling up the bed legs from the floor, you can but the bed's feet inside floor protectors (those small plastic cups) or pie pans filled with baited diatomaceous earth. That's what I did with my camping cot for several months, during the worst of my infestation. It made a lot of difference. If the bugs are coming from the mattress, then maybe you need to put another layer of plastic on it. Also, you probably already know this, but make sure the bed isn't touching any wall and that your sheets and blankets do not touch the floor.> > > > Take care,> > myrtle
