Guest guest
Actually I used to get this when I was a whole lot sicker than I am now. I would eat and then get really hot and sick, headache etc. But anymore, since my blood sugar is more under control and I've lost weight I'm not sickish after a meal, MSG will cause this reaction too. Guest guest
Did you also have small painful bumps behind your ears? Like acne but not? I still find it weird that we all ate from the same food in the same cartons but no one else got sick. So i do not think it was actual food poisoning because no one else got it. That is what leads me to think i have a big MSG intolerance. I only recently started eating Chinese food. As a kid i felt sick after eating a bite or two and so i never ate it after the first couple of attempts. About a yr ago my DH begged me to go to chinese food as he loves it. Used the 'tastes change as people get older' line. Well i did and after getting sick this last time we thought back and realized the other few times we had eaten chinese food i would complain of either a numb and tingly face, head ache, or feeling really heated and flushed after we had eaten it. I had only eaten it a few times and each time there was a different reaction. Hindsight.... i realize it was different reactions most likely allergy - MSG. But eating there so infrequently several months inbetween i had forgotten about the reactions. Will not forget ever again that is for sure Mother inlaw sent my DH home with a cookbook from a friend of hers. She received it yrs ago when they lived in Japan, the friend wrote the cookbook, and was owner of Chinese Food restaraunt in Japan. So we are hoping it will have authentic recipes, unlike the ones i keep finding in american cookbooks and online. I have attemtped to make it at home but it never turns out right and is always pretty bland. We like a lot of flavor and seasonings. Since i have only eaten chinese food a few times i really do not have much of a taste experience to compare with the recipes we have tried. Hopefully this 'authentic' cookbook will give me a good base. My DH is bummed about it all - his favorite food (and the kids like it too) and after 12 yrs of being married i finally eat it with him this past yr and like it. So he was excited that it was a chioce for a night out once and awhile. After my experience and knowing what we know we about food/additivies etc.... we decided it was not worth the damage that may be happening to eat there a couple of times a yr. Hence the cookbook ...... and soon to be many failed attempts to make some home made chinese food
Guest guest
I had a big vomitous reaction to some sweet and sour chicken when I was in high school. I avoid msg now, since I don't enjoy headaches, but I have never had a mondo reaction like that again in 20 years, and I do eat commercial chinese about 2 or 3 times a year and before this gluten free trial once a month take out or pizza, with only extreme thirst afterwards and no headache. Possibly some dishes rely on it more for flavor than others- perhaps we should learn this. I have read that the livers of Asian folks process MSG better than ours. Do keep looking for options, there is a wonderful Asian restaurant here that uses no msg at all. Anecdotally, I have noticed that my Father's tolerance for msg has decreased as he is declining in health, and I believe that this is directly proportional to his liver function, as is mine. I have noticed that liver support (milk thistle magnesium, b vitamins) allows me to drink cheap wine without a hangover, but I haven't tried dosing msg yet.
