, I'm a meteorologist and I've been seeing contrails since I was a

kid in the late 1950's and 1960's. They are ice crystal clouds formed

on tiny particles from jet exhaust. And yes, that jet exhaust is

pollution. The contrails only form into long trails if the relative

humidity is high enough. The long trails only occur at high altitudes

above around 20,000 feet and most frequently are seen from airlines

that normally cruise around 35,000 feet. When the relative humidity

is high at typical cruise altitude, just about every airline jet

passing through the area leaves a long trail. We see them routinely

on satellite imagery crisscrossing large patches of sky where the

relative humidity is high around 35,000 feet.

If you were wanting to spray someone with inhalable poison, it would

be totally ineffective to do so from such high altitudes. Inhalable

particles are so small that they can remain suspended in the air

almost indefinitely and at such high altitudes the air does not mix

down to the ground often for days or longer. Particles large enough

to fall to the ground quickly from such high altitudes would be too

large to breath in. They might hit you on the head :)

Did you ever see crop dusters spraying from thousands of feet in the

air? They know you have to fly very close to the ground to deliver

the highest possible concentrations at ground level. Not that I

advocate crop dusting :)
