Vitamin D from animal foods vs. the sun

Does anybody know of any potential benefits of getting vitamin D from

food rather than from the sun?

I know that there are plenty of isomers from foods that may have

additional benefits, but your body also converts excess D from

sunlight into inactive isomers if I remember correctly...

I get enough of sun but was just wondering if dietary vitamin D would

have any unique benefits that the sun doesn't offer.
