Guest guest
Fiber will indeed feed all constituents of the intestinal flora. For people whose gut flora is predominantly good, fiber often helps since it provides a food source for the beneficial flora. It also feeds the pathogenic flora, but since they are present in smaller numbers and since the beneficial bacteria are multiplying as well, the overall effect is positive. If there are substantial amounts of pathogenic flora (certain species of bacteria and yeast), then fiber may exacerbate the problem since it will feed the bad bugs. Also, this is somewhat dependent upon the type of fiber being consumed. There are studies which show that inulin/FOS selectively stimulate the growth of bifidobacteria and lactobacillus, two of the most beneficial species of bacteria in the gut. Overall, I'd say this is very subjective. If you are able to tolerate the coconut butter and don't notice a reaction, it's probably fine. If you don't react well to it, or have some doubt, I'd leave it out until your gut flora improves. K.
