Guest guest
There could be two reasons for this other than usual Monsanto politics. Florida is buying thousands of acres northwest of The Everglades from a sugar grower to add to The Everglades and sugar beets are the ethanol crop in France. Sugar beets produce 4 times the ethanol of corn per acre. Wanita --- In , " haecklers " <haecklers@...> wrote: > > Have you heard about this? Guest guest
Great! I wonder how long it will still be safe to make beet kvass? Guest guest
Yeah, I think the seed grower is near one of the large seed- saver/organic seed grower type places, maybe that's where I read the initial thing about the beet seeds. Beets are wind-pollinated so soon they'll be like corn and canola - even the organic ones and heirloom ones will be contaminated, unless small farmers far from sugar beet production will be saving their own seeds. At least it's a biennial, so most who grow beets won't be letting them go to the pollen stage, unlike corn, canola, etc. > > > Have you heard about this? Guest guest
Sugar beets are different from the red beets you use for beet kvass. Sugar beets are very very starchy, bland and don't have the red color we're used to seeing in beets. You can also get organic red and golden beets if they are available. Depending on where you live and your consumption of organic, produce buying clubs/co-ops are out there. I ran one for many years in Michigan. Parashis wrote: > > Great!
