Guest guest
I have an unusual question. What functions of the colon are done only or almost exclusively by the colon (other than water absorption) and are required for optimal health? Are there populations of bacteria that only exist there that manufacture specific nutrients? Do you almost exlusively absorb certain nutrients there? As someone who has had a total colectomy 15 years ago (yes it was absolutely necessary and that is not debatable) I would like to make sure that I am doing everything that I can as far as nutrition to stay in good health. If there are certain functions that can only be done in the colon is there anything that I can do to make up for that loss of function other than eat some sort of probiotic food with every meal? I have always been told my mainstream doctors that I just need to make sure I get enough potassium and water and I should be fine.
