Guest guest
Carol, AT times there is a lot of talk on this list. I will let you know that I found out I was a diabetic 16 years ago then a year later lost my sight due to it so ust have had it a long time before that. I first was on insulin but then started watching my diet and exercising I only took a few units per day so rather than having to learn how to fill the syringe, etc. I asked the doctor to put me on oral medication. I still use 2.5 miligrams of glucotrol every morning. my last A1C was 6.3. Dean
Guest guest
Carol, yes there is usually allot of talking on this list! I don't do much of the talking, I am still learning from the group! Which I much appreciate! I sent in recipes, because it was requested of me to do so! This is my way of contributing to the list, since my knowledge of Diabetes and all of it's consequences are still in the infant stage! I am a type 2. Yes, I am employed as a rehabilitation teacher, and have been for 34 years! Talk > >> >> >> >> Does amyone in this group talk or do you just send recipies? Has anyone found any way around the public transportation issue? Debbie Re: Talk Carol, AT times there is a lot of talk on this list. Guest guest
How long have you been without your vision? There is a public transportation system here called ACT I'm not sure what it stands for and when I first lost my vision I started to ride this bus. I found it to be very slow and because of the slowness I ended up have more problems insulin reactions than I ever had.I know all that stuff about taking food with you but I don't really have the money for convience food. So now there is a senior citizens bus I ride but it doesn't go out of this little city and since I am 49 everyone else is much older than me. Guest guest
How do you use an insukin pump without vision? Does your wife help you? I was diagnosed in 1967 at age 10. i take lantus everday in the morning and novolog as needed with an insulin pen. I thought about an insulin pump but reconsidered because I don;t care to have needles stuck in my belly day after day. I also worried about infection. I can still see but I can't identify things unless I get right on top of them.I mow my own yard and my neighbors, take care of my house, and am attempting to take online classes for a bachelors degree in liberal arts. I hope some day to be a writer. The thing that really gets to me about vision loss is the way people treat you so I don't mention it unless I am asked. I don't use a cane or a guide dog or anything like that I don't really need to I do pretty good but I get awful lonely. Guest guest
I have been without my sight since the age of 13, nothing to do with Diabetes! Are you able to get around on your own? Guest guest
hi debbie, i know exactly what you are saying. i too have been diabetic for forty years and blind for four years this november. i woke up blind with no signs of this going to happen. i have found my seeing friends had a very difficult time to adjust, most of them scattered. they said they were shocked to see this could happen to such an active person. and yes i can relate to your problem. you are totally dependent on others to help you. things like getting groceries, going to a social event are major problems. do you have any sight at all? Guest guest
I can get around just fine without help except at night. I never go ut so it isn't a problem. I did go to a rehab place at first but they weren't very good so I quit. My issues are finances and transportation. Finding a job with vision this bad is not something employers want to deal with. The last job I had I couldn't keep for very long because I couldn't drive. Debbie Talk > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > >> > > > >> > > > >> Does amyone in this group talk or do you just send recipies? Guest guest
Hi Debbie, I use a device called a Count-a-Dose to measure my insulin. I mix insulins and it works great! I have been using it for 15 years and love the independence it gives me. You can get them from Independent Living Aids catalogue in the States and from the National Federation for the Blind. Guest guest
I do have a question about a diabetic diet. Has anyone on here ever tried a low carb diet to control blood sugar levels? Debbie Re: Talk Hi Debbie, The way to get people to talk about things when the list is quiet is to do what you just did and post a message. Just because one conversation is going on or a person is posting one thing like recipies doesn't mean you can't start another thread if there's something you'd like to discuss. Guest guest
Debbie, oh boy can I relate to your situation. I have a brother that spoke to me for the first time since before I was blind, because he could not get a handle on it, smile. he is healthy but he cant get a handle on my blindness? I don't get it. I hope nothing ever happs to him. I was a widow at the time it happened. I fell out of bed and hit my head. and was overmedicated by a doctor to one and half to two years that brought this all on. the over medication causes bleeding ulcers. I lost six pints of blood and my organs were shutting down. the blood left the eyes to save the brain. I woke blind. for the first year I could pick up a bit of a shadow if the light hit it right but now it is total darkness. but on the bright side I met a grate guy after I lost my sight we married and it was him that pushed it not me, smile. he is a singer so we go out he sings, I listen. he does concerts, weddings, funerals, sings at the hospitals, homes and the like. I have two grown sons and grandmother of seven. the one son is another who cant handle the blindness so I have seen him once and the grandchildren twice. the other son is wonderful I see him and his beautiful wife and four children all the time. so life is strange. if I wrote a book I would never have thought of such interesting twists. Guest guest
I think there are a few on here who eat low carb diets. I just count carbs but don't limit them. But then, most people here have better control than I do. Jen Re: Talk Hi Debbie, The way to get people to talk about things when the list is quiet is to do what you just did and post a message. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, I am using a low carb hi fiber diet right now. It does work to help me control my sugars. I still have some problems though because I take prednasone, a drug which makes insulin less effective, but I am finding it is helping me. Ruthm Re: Talk I do have a question about a diabetic diet. Guest guest
Ruth, There is no specific agency and most jobs around here are in St. Louis Mo. which is about an hour by car away from here about 2-3 hrs by bus I have found with the transportation service around here you can often get where you need to be on time but you may wait for hours to get back home I find that very upseting. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Have you looked into low vision aids? My vision is about 20/600 in my better eye and about 20/1500 in the other and even at this level I can use low vision aids successfully to see things that are small or farther away than I could without them. Of course I don't only rely on those but magnifiers and CCTVs and monoculars do help a lot of specific things. It may also help with being able to do jobs (or convince employers that you can do them). I have been legally blind since just after I was born so I grew up using these tools. Guest guest
I live in L.A County, so the public transportation is not so bad. I think the bigger the city, the better the transportation. We also have a paratrn=ansit system, that, if you qualify, lets you go anywhere in the county for $1.80 or $2.70 (if going over 20miles), so transportation here is really good. Guest guest
Ken, Carbs and calories are two different things. Food is made up of three basic things--carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Carbohydrates are the part of food that is eventually converted to energy or blood sugar. Protein is also converted eventually but much more slowly, and fat simply slows down how fast carbs or protein are converted to blood sugar. Calories are a measure of how much energy you will get from a certain food. There are 4 calories per gram of carb, 4 calories per gram of protein, and 9 calories per gram of fat. Carbs are used by diabetics to control their blood sugar from spiking and/or know how much insulin to take, and calories are used for weight loss--if you burn more calories than you eat you lose weight, if you burn the same amount as you eat then your weight remains stable, and if you eat more than you burn then you gain weight. I hope that's not too confusing. The units for carbohyrates and calories used is the same in both Canada and the US, but the way food is measured (ounces versus grams, etc.) may differ just as inches/centimetres differ, it's just a different way of measuring or weighing food.
