Guest guest
Hi Debbie, Don't we all find it frustrating! We have handi-transit here, I call it not so handi-transit and you can wait for at least an hour sometimes to get a ride. I use to use the regular bus, but since I had my stroke, I am forced to use handi-transit. That's too bad about the employment. When I lost my sight I lived out in the country and had to move into the city just so I could function independently. Sometimes you just have to weigh out what means the most to you which is not always easy. Ruth Re: Talk Ruth, There is no specific agency and most jobs around here are in St. Louis Mo. which is about an hour by car away from here about 2-3 hrs by bus I have found with the transportation service around here you can often get where you need to be on time but you may wait for hours to get back home I find that very upseting. Guest guest
Debbie, Have you tried getting connected with your local Department of Rehabilitation? Most states and Canada have this service available Re: Talk , Recipies are great and I use them sometimes don't gert me wrong. I joined this site to try to get useful information about living as a blind diabetic. After 40 years of diabetes and 6 years as a blind diabetic I want to know how others deal with vision loss. One day I was a self supporting employed person the next I am labeled as handicapped and unemployed some how that just doesn't seem right. Guest guest
To add to what said, proteins also slow down the rate of absorbtion by carbs, as well as the amount of fiber in the carbohydrate. You still need to watch the fat because diabetics tend to have a higher tendency to have clogged arteries, so it's best to slow down the carbs with protein and fiber as opposed to higher fat count. That's also why it is recommended to eat fruit as opposed to fruit juice. The fiber slows down the rate of absorbtion of sugar into the blood stream. Ruth Re: Talk Ken, Carbs and calories are two different things. Food is made up of three basic things--carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Carbohydrates are the part of food that is eventually converted to energy or blood sugar. Protein is also converted eventually but much more slowly, and fat simply slows down how fast carbs or protein are converted to blood sugar. Calories are a measure of how much energy you will get from a certain food. There are 4 calories per gram of carb, 4 calories per gram of protein, and 9 calories per gram of fat. Carbs are used by diabetics to control their blood sugar from spiking and/or know how much insulin to take, and calories are used for weight loss--if you burn more calories than you eat you lose weight, if you burn the same amount as you eat then your weight remains stable, and if you eat more than you burn then you gain weight. I hope that's not too confusing. The units for carbohyrates and calories used is the same in both Canada and the US, but the way food is measured (ounces versus grams, etc.) may differ just as inches/centimetres differ, it's just a different way of measuring or weighing food. Guest guest
Danny, What beand insulin pump do you have? I have the Disetronic H-tron. With this brand, I can get prefilled insulin cartridges, so I don't have to worry about filling the cartridge, although I did it before they offered the prefilled ones. Re: Talk I can do most of the tasks neccesary for pump therepy on my own, but there are certain things that I do need help to perform. For example, I get my wife to help to set date and time, because the steps to do this are multi and varitgated, and I do not wish to try to remember all the integrals to perform such a task successfully, just to realize that I cannot confirm that I have completed the process successfully. Most of the things necessary for pump therapy a blind person can, and I know some who do successfully. Filling the reservoir would be a challenge, for it has a tendency to have air bubbles, but if you are careful to go through a proven routine to rid the reservoir of them, it can be done. In short, I think a majority of things can be done by a blind person, but some of the pump tasks sighted help is needed, perhaps that of a family member, a good friend, a good neighbor, etc. In my estimation, two developments that have revolutionized diabetic therepy is that of the glucose meter and the pump. In my 46 years of being diabetic nothing external to my understanding of what is required for good control and determination by the Lord's grace to do it has had more impact on controlling my diabetes than these two things. If I had my rathers, I'd rather I'd had access to these devices in 1960, but I didn't. Even though I have had bad things happen to me in this present temperal life, all of which I deserve, I am confident of my eternal state, however, because I know that God works all things for my good and that good is that I be conformed to the image of His Son. Guest guest
Debbie, Tht is what most of us try to do-low carb and higher in protein (unless you also have kidney disease). A lot of us have the read the book by Dr. Bernstein, who is atype 1 diabetic who proposes you eat only 30 Grams of carbs a day. I think a lot of us think that is too loo low, but many of us eat only 30 grams per meal. This depends a lot on how much exercise you do. For instance, if you exercise a lot, you might need more carbs than that. We also count carbohydrates and have several web sites and wonderful carb counting site, originated by Dean, that I can send you if interested, to help us with the carb counting. How is your A1C? Re: Talk I do have a question about a diabetic diet. Has anyone on here ever tried a low carb diet to control blood sugar levels? Guest guest
I also used the count-a-dose before the insulin pen. Also, in todays world, you can get your insulin in pens, which are easy for blind people to use. Re: Talk How do you use an insukin pump without vision? Does your wife help you? I was diagnosed in 1967 at age 10. i take lantus everday in the morning and novolog as needed with an insulin pen. I thought about an insulin pump but reconsidered because I don;t care to have needles stuck in my belly day after day. I also worried about infection. I can still see but I can't identify things unless I get right on top of them.I mow my own yard and my neighbors, take care of my house, and am attempting to take online classes for a bachelors degree in liberal arts. I hope some day to be a writer. The thing that really gets to me about vision loss is the way people treat you so I don't mention it unless I am asked. I don't use a cane or a guide dog or anything like that I don't really need to I do pretty good but I get awful lonely. Guest guest
I lost sight in one eye for not ducking while being shot at, and I lost sight in the other eye a few years later due to a stroke brought on by diabetic problems. This has been a very interesting and informative support group get together this afternoon, has it not? I have found out that we all have the same problems and concernes and yet we all have different ways of dealing or copeing with them. It is also refreshing to find a group of people that no matter the problem that some one else has there is some one with a solusion or good advise on the possible way to solve it. Thank you for letting me share your afternoon and may God Bless you all. good night. Guest guest
Hi Debbie, There would have been no need for the vetrectomy if you had not had the laser treatment. A vitrectomy is the last ditch effort to save your sight when laser will not work and there is too much scar tissue. The real answer for all of it is to watch the blood sugars and to not get into trouble in the first place. I know because I've been there, done that. Guest guest
Hi Danny, I know what you mean about the painful memories. Since I had my stroke, I rode a little bit and then could not get back into the program. Everything is for the kids you know and there is nothing set up for the adults who could equally benefit from such programs. If I had not had the stroke, I would have a horse on my Dad's farm and would still be riding. I too rode a bit of barrels and poles and give you a lot of credit for still trying it when you can't see the pole until you're just about on top of it. I had full sight and had fun making sure things got started the right way. Way to go! I won Jr. for my club. I miss it all terribly and the worst for me was when I had to sell my equipment. I worked really hard for it all, buying better equipment in order to keep up with those better than me and then beat them or give them a good run for thir money. I try to look at it all in a fond memories way instead of being sad and sometimes I still ride in my dreams. That's all we can do. I'm glad to have found a kindred spirit. Keep a stiff upper lip! By the way it's Ruth spelt r u t h not bruce. Ruth Ruth Re: Talk Hi Bruce, I rode western with limited vision up intil 1988. The event in which I excelled was " pole bending " . My wife and I moved to Athens, GA in 1988 at which time I was in the midst of a Ph.D. program. We did not have the circumstances to have horses. The horse I showed for years died in 1987, and I haven't owned a horse since. the story is too long and painful to expand further. I won the senior pole bending championship at the Border Belt Horseman Association in 1979, and I was legally blind. I could not see the first pole until I was about 20 feet from it. I have a deep appreciation for horses, a fact which my wife recognized. We spend our honey moon on a working ranch in Montana in 1988, and we rode every day. It was great! Guest guest
Hi , I 'm sorry, but I got a laugh when you said you met your partner when you were in the hospital after losing your sight. It's funny because my husband picked me up in the hospital in the same way. He did kind things and made me feel needed after having my stroke. As a matter of fact, one of my friends joked that I was the only woman she knew that picked up a man when I was flat on my back and not in the typical way one means that. You've got to wonder, what is it with these guys? Instead of going to the bar, they go to the hospital? Funny way to pick up girls! I'm extremely glad it happened though because we just shared our fourth wedding anniversary, and see many more happy years to come. Thank God for these guys!
