Re: Mattress Covers - wool/fleece

I read awhile ago that wool fleece is the very best thing for

bedridden people to sleep on because it cushions so well that it

virtually eliminated the risk of bedsores. I used to think it would

be nice for the babies to sleep on, but never looked into it.

Being an avid knitter, my opinion is that while merino is nice and

soft, the " common " wool is superior. The softer wools tend to pill

into balls and just don't hold its shape or stay nice as long as the

thicker wools, that can last for decades with no loss in quality.

Just put a cotton sheet over it. If the thread count is high enough,

you shouldn't be poked by anything scratchy.

Other things about wool - it tends to resist dirt and odors, it keeps

you at comfortable body temperature nicely - not too much overheating

but warm. It's naturally flame-resistant (almost flame-proof!) BUT

it dissolves with acid, so spit-up, barf, and even pee from a leaky

diaper need to be washed off pretty quickly. I stepped in some vomit

when my son had a stomach bug when I was wearing my wool slippers.

It was a while before I got around to cleaning them and by the time I

did it had eaten a hole in them! You also can't use bleach on wool,

same dissolving problem.
