Guest guest
I was looking up information on growing mealworms for some friends and found out there is a terrible shortage that is hurting pet stores, zoos, wildlife rehab centers, etc. And I'm wondering if it has anything to do with the ProFume fumigant that is being used to kill worms in grains - it leave very high residues of fluoride on the food. Guest guest
You probably already found all this out, but fwiw, they're extremely easy to raise. We did it for several years for our hamsters and guinea pigs. I was hoping the parrots would get the hang of eating them, but all they did was scream. *sigh* Just fill up a glass container - Ball-Mason jar, etc., with oatmeal, or leftovers from sifting freshly-ground wheat, or a combination - and toss the mealworms in. Feed 'em once a week with a dry lettuce leaf. There's similar directions here. To cover the jar, I used just canning jar ring, not the lid insert, and one piece of large-weave cheesecloth, securing the cheesecloth in place with the canning jar ring. Of course, if you need larger quantities, you can use Rubbermaid containers, etc., much like red-worm farming. Here's a mealworm supplier, if this helps: http://www.nyworms.com/mealworms.htm Sharon On Tue, Jul 29, 2008 at 11:02 AM, haecklers <haecklers@...> wrote: > I was looking up information on growing mealworms for some friends and > found out there is a terrible shortage that is hurting pet stores, > zoos, wildlife rehab centers, etc. And I'm wondering if it has > anything to do with the ProFume fumigant that is being used to kill > worms in grains - it leave very high residues of fluoride on the food. > > > -- When the people fear their government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people, there is liberty. - Jefferson Deut 11:15 He will put grass in the fields for your cattle, and you will have plenty to eat.
