Guest guest
okay, i am super confused right now and i really hope someone can help me out. i am trying to figure out what the difference is between raw liver, cooked liver and liver glandular supplements and how to get the recommended amount of folate in pregnancy. according to M's article in the latest WT, a pregnant woman needs 600mcg a day of folate and that would be 3.7 ounces of cooked liver. does it make a difference whether the liver is cooked or raw? also, if a person were to take a supplement say from Dr. Ron's which are 500mg caps and 6 caps equal one ounce of liver, how many would a person have to take a day? if 1 milligram is 1000 micrograms and you only need 600 mcg, then are you getting 500,000 mcg with every 500 mg capsule?? i know, my brain just cannot deal with this. i feel like i could get every other vitamin requirement from my diet and a few extra supplements, but folate seems to be difficult. also, since beets contain folate, could i possibly get a good amount from beet kvass, or is that not an appropriate source? thank you. amanda
Guest guest
Hi , I cook liver for one minute in a pan. This should have little effect on the folate level. I would think it would be better to cook liver when pregnant to be safe. The capsules are 500 mg of liver, not 500 mg of folate. If six capsules are one ounce of liver, then you need to get 3.7 x 6 = 22.2 capsules to meet the folate requirement. I would simply eat the types of foods listed, or take a small folate supplement to make up the difference (preferably 5-methyl-tetrahydrafolate or folinic acid if you can find either of them). I think all you have to do is shift some of your focus from grains and/or fats to vegetables and legumes.
