Guest guest
Number of non-food, non-nutrition issues to consider.....for my Asperger's son, it is sometimes anxiety-driven. Other times, it's a " stim " (which can also be anxiety-based). In my nephew's case, it was Tourette Syndrome which began when he was.....8? 9? 10? Can't remember exactly....... First thing to do is chart it - when it occurs, what the antecedent is to the " behavior " , stress level, etc. Age, diet, other underlying conditions, medications, etc., are all helpful to consider. This is a tough one to guess when there's so little information to go on. Guest guest
He kinda wrinkles his nose - looks a bit like a rabbit. It's very recent and he says he isn't aware he's doing it. He does get easily stressed, and diet has been less than ideal lately. i don't know how you decide what is a tic and what is just a 'bad habit'. he goes through these phases though where he does something like this and then suddenly stops, but before long, another movement develops. w > > Is it something like tardive dyskinesia, or is it something different > or just not that severe? <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardive_dyskinesia > > > > - > > > Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about tics? Guest guest
My son has Tourette's Syndrome. It started with a similar tic when he was around 7. With TS, it is typical for the tics to wax and wane. If they've been around for over a year it could be TS. Here is a TS forum: http://www.latitudes.org/forums/index.php? showforum=1 There is more info on other tic disorders, and the discussion is centered towards alternative treatments. I hope you're not too worried. I know I was when my son started his tics...so here's some compassion your way. Blessings, Jasmin > > He kinda wrinkles his nose - looks a bit like a rabbit. Guest guest
What you're describing sounds like a habit. Sometimes kids start something like that and then it becomes habit and they do it unconsciously then. He may not remember/may be embarrassed to tell you he started it on purpose. It an also be magnesium deficiency; I think I read that magnesium supplements would also cure tardive diskinesia. Lyme can cause tics, twitches. I had an extremely annoying tic on my cheek just below the eye for weeks on end from lyme. It seems unlikely for that to be the only symptom, tho but if he's also having trouble sleeping at night, tired during the day, stomach problems, stiffness or soreness, headaches, etc. you might want to get him checked. Do try not to worry too much, tho. Kids do all kinds of weird things then grow out of them again. They seem designed to keep you scratching your head wondering what's going on?? > > > > > > Is it something like tardive dyskinesia, or is it something > different > > > or just not that severe? > > <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tardive_dyskinesia > > > > > > > > > > - > > > > > > > Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about tics? Guest guest
I have read about magnesium and twitches, too, but I was hesitant to reply since I'm always harping about magnesium. . . .I get little twitches by my eye when I'm low on calcium, too. Of course choline for healthy nerve impulses wouldn't hurt; GABA can calm overactive nerves and is the OTC Neurontin. Guest guest
I have read parasites might be the cause of tics, especially suddenly developed ones. A friend of mine put her four yo on a parasite cleanse (it was lots of pills and potions over the course of several months- lots of bribing). He was dx on the autism spectrum, but after the cleanse he normalized a lot. He wasn't exhibiting autistic behaviors all the time, just when tired and then the tics began. The parasite cleanse really helped him out. Hope that helps, Sal! Does anyone have any experience or knowledge about tics? Not so much little muscle twitches - like a twitching eyelid, but more of a whole facial expression. What would cause a child to suddenly develop these after not having any previously? Is there a nutritional basis for any of this, or changes or additions that might help?
Guest guest
I've heard that too - some autistic kid got parasites while travelling abroad and while on the antiparisiticals he got pretty normal, but whenever they discontinued them it returned. I've heard that about artemisinin as well (separate case), which is an antimalarial. Nothing about tics in those cases, tho. > > I have read parasites might be the cause of tics, especially suddenly > developed ones.
