You do need to be very careful as we had a " blow up " about just this issue. My marketing person " assumed " that the physician's office would be receptive to our help and offered to reprint the handouts at no cost to the physician's office. She thought we would be providing a valuable service. Unfortunately, you may have noticed that some physicians tend to have a case of the God complex. Our offer was perceived as a reflection on the aptitude of the physician's staff and we were scolded to mind our own business. After I took a marketing course I learned what we had done wrong. When you provide materials to a referral source, such as prescription pads, protocols, or referral lists, there is a right way and a wrong way to do it. People tend to push away things that are offered to them and tend to want things they think they can't have. We were thinking about getting together with other PT clinics to defray the cost of printing these list and giving them to the doctor's staff to hand out. The staff would not have to worry about keeping the lists updated or pay for them. The benefit to us is to be consistently on the list with out calling and reminding the office staff to put us on. Every time you market a physician, you are attempting to get a product. In the end you want to get referrals, but initially, all you want is to have the receptionist recognize you and welcome you into the office. Each step of the marketing process has a specific product. The objective is to go in, get the product you want, and get out--all in two minutes or less. Regerding RX pads or handouts, you have to create a reach from the physician's office.
