The reason for the RELIGION tag is that religion is off-topic for this

group. I could be very strict and ban all off-topic discussions, but

that would violate my philosophical belief in the value of free and

unfettered speech and debate. Many list members, however, ONLY want

to come to this group to discussion nutrition, health, fitness and

other related ON-TOPIC subjects and find the conversations about

religion (and politics) which periodically break out very irritating

and distracting. Our very limited tagging system is designed to allow

these different but overlapping groups of people to coexist

harmoniously. People who don't want to read religious (or political)

posts can filter their email using the tags; people who want to read

and even participate in those discussions don't have to. The tag is

not meant to censor or ghettoize religious speech in any way.

Of course even such a utilitarian compromise system can't please

everyone, but the notion that it's somehow a scarlet letter is simply

mistaken.
