When I had my daughter, the hospital made me sign a permission form

that I was turning over to them for research uses her umbilical cord

blood and any tissue (placenta, etc.). I asked what if I didn't want

to sign it, they said " Then you can't have the baby here " . This was

sprung on me after my water broke and I didn't really have anywhere

else to go. Weird, huh? That was in a poor neighborhood. When my son

was born, in a wealthy suburb, there was no such form, even tho that

was also a teaching hospital.
