Politics or Nutrition???

OK, I give. I joined this group just a few days ago and have many questions and

could use some advice. However, since I joined and posted my " hello... newbie "

email, I've gotten only two responses (thank you!!). I went back and read the

description of the group to be sure I didn't misunderstand something and I saw

this:

Have questions? Need help or advice? You¢ve come to the right place! List-owner

Idol, moderator Masterjohn and members from all over the world share

information, resources and even hard-to-find ingredients!

And the topics of discussion didn't include anything about politics but that's

mostly what I've seen the last few days is emails about politics and government

espionage. I figure if the folks on this list put as much energy into emails

welcoming newbies, I'd have gotten some great advice! But, alas, that doesn't

seem to be the case.

Best regards and good bye. 'Off to find a list that can actually help me on my

new journey to discovering a healthy diet.

Nutrition is a broad topic that does touch on politics at times and

with politics and religion, it's easy to get carried away hence the

adage not to talk about these things at the dinner table. I have been

on this list for a couple of years on and off and many of my questions

don't get answered whether politics is being discussed or not. That's

just the nature of chat groups i.e. it depends if someone knows the

answer, if anyone has even read the post or question, etc, etc.

Why not bring up your concern in a more productive way that gives

people a chance to respond vs. chastising and then leaving the group

with a slamming of the chat room door. I have gotten some bad info. on

here and some amazing info but more importantly than the info has been

the support. I find people to be supportive here. I have emailed many

people with a question about one of their posts from the archives and

all but maybe one or two people responded. So the group has a helping

nature vs. those who just want to post b/c they want to show off their

information, which can be the case in situations like these.

" ya cain't al-ways git whatcha wa-ant " ... ;+)

Seems to me if you want a free source of info, freely given,

unrestricted, you're gonna have to be a little more tolerant of other

humans and their attitudes and opinions... There is plenty of good

information to be found here, and the delete button is just within

reach, up there by your pinky.

Or, you could go pay good money to ask questions of some " expert "

stranger who doesn't want to take the time to even look you in the

eye, doesn't care whether you live or die or exist in a miserable

state, and who has PLENTY of attitude, and still doesn't answer your

questions...

I don't know if you're still here, but if you are, it's very easy to

avoid ever seeing any discussions about either politics or religion by

simply creating an email filter to delete any posts tagged either

POLITICS or RELIGION. (Those two off-topic topics do frequently

become the subject of discussion here, partly because some elements of

their domains do in fact relate directly to nutrition and health, and

partly because this is a community, and fellow members of communities

naturally tend to talk about many things.)

As to answers to your questions... different people are here at

different times, and not everyone's necessarily going to have an

answer. I wish this list could provide all the answers, but no list

can. The fact that you got two replies, though, could be the gateway

to a longer discussion on the subject.

I'm getting my PhD now, so I'm only here intermittently. I responded

to a political thread because I was simply stating thoughts I'd

already formulated, which didn't take much time. I don't know

everything, and don't have the time to research things or think

extensively about things right now, so I am not responding at all to

most threads.

The information here is, of course free, and there are also thousands

and thousands of messages that can be searched by keyword on the

group's website, which is also free.

Like said, we've designed a system that makes it very easy to

delete political and religious posts when those threads come up. So

staying on the list is a pretty good deal once you understanding how

to best utilize it.

is right. The volumes of messages in the archives here are

quite valuable - and FREE. The advanced search option on the

group page is especially helpful in researching the archive. If you

don't get an answer immediately to a question, search the archive.

Chances are it's been discussed already.

This is an information and learning list. There's a lot of

information presented here, from different and sometimes conflicting

points of view, but I like that. It's up to each of us to sort it out

and use what is pertinent for our situation. Everyone's different and

what works for one person may not work for another. So, it's best to

research any advice you get, whether from this list or elsewhere.

I definitely agree that this list is invaluable and I think it's best

used as a learning and information tool. Skip the topics that don't

interest you. Learn from the ones that do.

There's always something new to learn :)
