Yes, I love Jess's blog!

I can believe it does not smell. It's like a kitty litter box. If you

take it out frequently to the compost, should not be a problem. The

key would be to design a " throne " that would have an easy-to-remove

drawer of some sort -- that you could take in and out.

I just read in " Food Not Lawns " (fantastic book) that the only kind of

water you cannot re-use in a greywater recycling system is toilet

water. So she recommends humanure composting.

Harvey Ussery spoke of it briefly in his WAPF 2007 speech on The Urban

Homestead. (Utterly fascinating -- I recommend this to everyone -- I

learned SO much. He also had the coolest method of using road kill to

produce maggots for chicken feed. I know it sounds horrifying, but it

was so smart!)

Anyway, I would *love* to do the humanure composting. You would save

a ton of water. And it's such good material for the compost!!

But first I need to convince DH to let me move to a rural area so I

can have some chickens. And a cow. This could take a while... I think

I will wait on the humanure composting until after I get those other

things. :-P

,

My brother's been doing this for years. I never really noticed it smelling

excessively when I used his humanure toilet. I haven't used it in a while,

but I think there's a bit of a smell when you lift the lid up.

It's the perfect kind of toilet for the woman who hates when the man leaves

the lid up (cuz there's incentive to keep the lid closed ;-)

Suze, I guess if you're eating a good diet, it shouldn't smell as bad.

Does the compost come out well?

I'm a good man. I always keep the lid closed :)

I suppose it depends on the design of the composting toilet, but I've

never tried or even seen one in person myself, so who knows.
