Winand,

Yes....Ptosis is a common symptom of Mito. This is when the eyelid muscles weaken and droop. There are many on this list who have ptosis so I will let them respond, but I wanted you to know that we are familar with it.

Winand,

I know there are several on the list with ptosis that can address your concerns

better than I since I don't have it, but I wanted you to know that I am thinking

of you and that it is good to hear from

you.

Hi winand

Well, all i can add is my experience. When I turned 22, my eyes dropped 3/4 way down all of a sudden. It was different for both my sister and my father who both had gradual eye drooping throughout their life. It became very bad for me visually and I decided to have corrective surgery. My sister followed me after a success. My father still suffers the most from the drooping and must hold his eyelids open to see clearly. This however, is different for everyone. My sister and I were never half as bad as my father. I am not the expert on ptosis, but I do know how it feels to have a doctor dxYou and know what it feels like to have it happen. I know that listening to people on this list really helped me learn the most, i am only sorry i can't give you any more info. The umdf website is all good :o) and a great resource. A lot of people on the list have symptoms like this, so you are not alone. If there is anything that I can answer don't hesitate to ask. I can give you the number of a great doctor --- james

Hi Larus,

My daughter has ptosis. She had silicone slings implanted to hold her lids

open. When she is awake, her eyes are open at " half mast " but she can use

her forehead muscles to raise her lids when she wants to (the slings are

attached to the muscles in the forehead to give her this control). When she

is sleeping, her eye lids do not close completely but enough that they are

protected from drying out.

I don't know your situation but this may be a viable option if your

condition gets worse.

There are also eyeglasses on the market that have devices to externally lift

the eye lid. I have never seen them though.

I hope this helps,

Hi Winand,

I had pretty severe ptosis. I also have ophthalmoplegia. It all started in my

late 20's. I will now be 38 yrs old in July. I had a very successful frontalis

sling operation in October of 1999. I can close my eyes completely, and unless

I pointed it out to you, you would not even realize I have had surgery.

I am not sure where you live, but if you are anywhere in the Rhode Island area,

I could give you the doctor's name. I highly recommend him.

Winand,

I had this happen to me suddenly back in 1994, after a really bad 'flu episode. At the same time the pupil in my left eye suddenly closed right down to a tiny dot. My neuro was surprised at the odd pupils(but then they don't seem very clued up here in the UK - only tests I had to dx me were bloods and a test where my neuro stabbed me with pins into muscles and passed electric current through to measure resistance or some such - no real explanation given to me!). He told me to remember to tell them in A & E if ever I get taken in after an accident!! Cheerful soul !

I fin dmy left eyelid droops badly when I'm tired. Mostly it's only about 1/4 to 1/2 down, but when I'm tired i can't see properly out of that eye and I have to hold the lid open.

I know what you're going through.

Keep smiling and don't let it get you down.
