Guest guest
Loan forgiveness over a period based on how much money is involved was a popular way 20 years ago. Loan forgiveness would be a $ amount forgiven every month they worked for you. If they decide not to work for you, they pay back the money with interest just like a regular loan. If they leave prior to the loan being totally forgiven, the remaining amount is paid back with interest acquired from the start of the loan. I found this to be effective in retaining new employees. Guest guest
We have done student loan repayement up to 50K paid off over 5-6 years. If the employee leaves early, the remaining portion is paid back at 1% over prime. It sounds like a lot of money, but how else do you get someone to move to Northwest Iowa? Guest guest
I hate to sound like a pessimist; but, I don’t consider student loans a reliable recruiting tool. Sounds great on the surface but therapists experience so many unique experiences in school and they see a world of opportunity and offers at graduation. Also, you may not have an opening at their time of graduation or they may just decide to leave with a cheap loan that can be picked up by another firm as a sign on. You may get hurt also by holding a slot open for this person and they decide to not take it and not let you know until it’s become a critical fill for you. I am sure student loans can be structured well but do you want an employee who wants to be working somewhere else. If I did structure it, I would make it closer to graduation when the student is more set in career directions. It’s a great concept but the graduates have screwed over too many employers on it. Guest guest
Matt et. al - It's not a bad thing to do, assuming that the individual is a W-2 employee and, of course that they know that the... $250, $500, $750, $1,000 -- or whatever you're " giving " them per month -- is taxable to them as normal income. You just have to do the Feds' bookkeeping for them. Depending on the new PT's individual tax picture, if they're in 23% tax bracket, making $600 available after tax for loan payments may easily cost the employer well over $1,100. That's before Federal and State Unemployment Taxes, and before the rest of the staff finds out what you're doing and asks for more for themselves. I'll leave it to our resident CPA (and billing guru from Iowa) to tweak my numbers. But, I think you get the picture. Financial compensation is a serious area of management, and needs to be considered from many perspectives before writing a check. Hope that helps! Dick Hillyer, PT Dr. W. Guest guest
On the other hand, it was an excellent recruiting tool which many hospital facilities utilized back then when PT's were few and demand was great. Facilities worked with the finances just fine, and they found it easier to recruit. Those days may be returning. I would not recommend " forgiving " $1,000 per month, due to the point you made, but $200/month helped with retention over the years. I was happy, the facility was happy, and when I was director, it helped recruit many therapists. Staff was happy to have more staff to help with patient care, and all of them knew of the program, and in fact, most had utilized it.
