The CMS inspector will ask for your occupational license, professional license,

storage cabinet for your active and discharged patients. He will also ask you a

variety of questions regarding how many employees you have employed, what types

of patients will be seen in your practice and what type of equipment will be

used in your practice.

Medicare Site Visit

I am part of a new outpatient physical therapy private practice. Our

medicare provider number is presently being processed. I received a

call from our state's medicare contracter asking my business hours so

they can come to the office to make a site visit.

Anyone out there who have gone been involved with a Medicare site visit

who can tell me what they look for when they come to the clinic?

I appreciate all input.

Thanks,

Hi . It's been awhile since I've been through it but it was an eye opening

experience. Long story short - the surveyor will come through with a

" Standards " grid which was probably sent to you in your application package.

Make that grid site specific to you and your facility and you will do well. I

don't have a current one but I'm sure someone on the listserve does.

We had a reputed " witch " as our surveyor and MAN did she put us through the

ringer. She went out of her way to explain the importance and purpose of

everything on her list. I have way too many stories from her visits but we

ended up as good friends and I have great respect for what she was trying to do

for us. There were several deficiencies that I wasn't aware of and she easily

could have pulled the rug out from under us on what seemed like nitpicky issues

but she didn't. She was a huge help. It's like that tough teacher that became

your favorite. Be VERY prepared. Doug

Well thanks to everyone for their input. The surveyor came to my clinic today

and all went smoothly. I had all the proper certificates/licenses available.

Basically he asked questions about how many Medicare patient's I was presently

treating, number of staff in office, where I store my charts, diagnoses and

looked over my clinic.

Few......I was relieved my experience was not too bad.

Thanks again for all that replied to my e-mail.

Have a great weekend!

Hi . You could inquire of your surveyor in advance. That might be a good

move anyway. I can't remember the specific name but it was a grid called

" Regulations and Standards " or something like that. I know that she continually

referenced, " meeting the standard " during her survey. Her message was to review

the standards and make them specific to your own facility. I scanned the

document and did just that and it became my manual and it worked beautifully.

In fact she said, " I wish everyone would do this because it makes it so much

easier on both of us " . Things were in the order of her grid so there wasn't so

much jumping around from one area to another. Hope this helps. My partner has

been a PT for 37 years and he handles this stuff now so I'll follow up with him.

Take care. Doug

medicare site visit

On Dec. 06, Doug Sparks wrote about a a surveyor who came to his facility for

a Medicare inspection. This surveyor came with a " Standards " grid, and went

though every point on the standards grid with him. He indicated the having one

on hand would better prepare one for a site visit.

Does anyone on the list have a current copy or could tell me where to find

one?
