Guest guest
First, It appears this thread is full of lively and well thought out comments. The fact that most American's are living paycheck to paycheck is really irrelevant to the discussion. They are doing so usually because they are selfish and foolish. We can't make excuses for our society's blatant hedonism and materialism. Second, while it is true that some people really don't have the money or resources to buy quality stuff, that is usually not the case. For instance our church sits in the middle of the one of the poorest areas of our city (actual, I think it is one of the poorest areas in the nation). Yet, I see these " poor " families with dish TV, cel phones, etc... again, not saying all families/people find themeselves here... middle class, lower class, etc... our whole nation is wantonly indulged like a 6 year old who already has too many toys yet keeps asking for more. One link that may interest a number of you is searching for " building life on $25 and a gym bag... " It is a very interesting take on the whole issue. Don't think it is the whole story, but worth pondering. We had a family in our group who was making $500 per week with 2 kids, with the dad working two jobs close to 60 hours per week. Yet, they purchased more local, quality stuff than almost anyone else in our group. But they were really good stewards in the home... she made cleaners, their own toothpaste, etc... So, beyond just food, there are a number of things we can do to help those with the least resources have more and with the more then direct that to local farms, etc...
