Guest guest
Friends, We have noticed that lots of people talk about getting chickens that are soy free for both meat and eggs. So, our question is what feed rations are used and where do you get them if they are soy and or corn free? Thanks
Guest guest
Do you want to raise some? You can join the WAPFarmers group - they have frequent discussions on the best feeds for livestock. One member who is very knowledgable is Harvey Ussery - you can see his website at www.themodernhomestead.us - he has a lot of information on mixing your own feed and alternatives to soy. Right now we're feeding our flock wild bird seed. It's a little pricier than the chicken feed but I didn't want the GM corn in it either and that's what the scratch grains have. They are thriving on the bird seed. It's millet, milo, oil sunflower seeds, and some canary seed and wheat-like grains. If they're free-range you don't need to worry so much about complete nutrition. We've got a hen that's going on 7 years old and still spry so I don't think we're malnourishing them. Since ours are also " pets " and give us joy, I don't care what the feed costs - they're still cheaper to feed than the dogs or cats are, or even the hamster my son has ($7 a bag for his food!) A lot of the feed stores have a soy-free chicken feed now; but I think if you can see the grains in it you know it doesn't have MSG and recycled paper or what-not as filler. > > Friends, > We have noticed that lots of people talk about getting chickens that > are soy free for both meat and eggs.
