Medical College, Indore. Phone No. 2527300, 2527361 _________________ Respected Sir/ Madam, Madhya Pradesh Network of People living with HIV (MPNP+) Indore is investigating into the recent death of HIV positive women who died yesterday on 3rd April 2007. Ms. Gita Bai, 30-year-old pregnant died in front of MY Hospital premises after the government hospital staff refused to admit the patient. Ms. Gita Bai was referred from Bhuranpur, Nehru Hospital, village Gambhirpura. She was HIV positive. On 31st March, Gita Bai along with her husband Karan Pawar, father-in-law Mohar Singh and mother in law Jyoti Bai came for treatment to the MY Hospital in Indore. After the preliminary examination in the OPD, she was referred and was taken to the ward for admission. But after studying the medical history of the patient in detail they came to know that the patient was HIV positive. Therefore, they intentionally discharged the patient and excused her to come on 2nd of April 2007. The relatives of Gita Bai started pleading the hospital staff not to discharge as she was in great labor pain and has reached the advance stage of pregnancy. But when the doctors blatantly refused to admit her. The relatives then planned to take her to some private hospital. While the patient came from the fifth floor of the hospital and reached the compound of the hospital to step into the auto rickshaw she delivered the baby girl near the water tank of the MY Hospital. The relatives again tried to approach the hospital administration to re-admit her but the staff and the security guards refused to enter into the hospital. The MY hospital’s doctors didn’t even bother to provide Nevraprin dosage for the mother and child which should have been provided 24 hours before the delivery. After the delivery of the baby girl they took the mother and child to their relative’s house near Dewas Nakha at Rahul Gandhi Nagar in Indore and stayed there for two days. As her condition was critical on 2nd of April 2007 she was brought to the MY Hospital at 9.30 am. They consulted Dr. VP Pandey ART incharge. She was admitted to ward no. 29 at 12.30 am. One of her relative Nawal Singh Lodhi contacted Dr. Gagan Gupta and Dr. Subhash Dube incharge of the MY Hospital, but no doctors came to attend the patient. At 4.30 pm when the patient became critical the relatives asked the staff nurse to call the doctor in-charge. Dr. Prashant came and attended the patient and was shifted to ward no 27. On 3rd April 2007, Gita Bai’s condition was worsened, but their were no doctors to attend her. Mr. Nawal Singh Lodhi then contacted the media persons Raj Express and Nai Dunia reporters. On 3rd April 2007, night at 11.30 pm Gita Bai took her last breath. She belonged from Banjaran OBC community and had five children. On 4th April 2007, when the news of the death flashed in major local daily newspapers MPNP+ President, Mr. Manoj Verma met the MY Hospital Head Gynecology department Dr. Lami Maru, she refused to divulge any information. MPNP+ President Manoj Verma called the collector (Mr. Vivek Agrawal, mobile no. 094250 97824), he said to register an FIR at the nearest police station and we will inquire into the matter immediately. When we reached the nearest Sayogitha Gunj police station to lodge an FIR the police refused to register the complain. We then submitted an application to the police station. An urgent appeal by MPNP+: 1) We would request the honorable collector for an urgent magisterial inquiry, which has caused death to HIV positive pregnant women. 2) Stern action against the MY Hospital administration including the doctors and staff incharge on duty dated 3rd April 2007. 3) Provide urgent emergency treatment to prevent the child from HIV positive 4) One lakh rupees compensation to the diseased family members who have suffered due to MY Hospital staff negligency.
