Guest guest
You can make soup with any old bird! If it's too dry the liquid will mask it. Often they have more flavor as well. Tell us how it all turns out! D. How old is too old - turkey? We've got a " pet " turkey that is a Broad-Breasted White, and going on her 3rd winter. It's female but I'd guess she's approaching 40 lb if not over that. She's gotten kind of mean and the kids are afraid to play in the yard anymore so it's time for her to go. My husband is wondering if the meat will be too tough. There was an article last year on the heritage turkey list about how 2 year old turkeys are better than one year olds, more body fat and actually cook out to juicier meat. They said there that the reason there are no 2 year old turkeys on the market is simply that they eat too much that second year to make it worth it. Has anyone here actually eaten a 2.5 year old turkey? I just read that they need to sit in the refrigerator for a few days for best quality or they come out tough. I was planning on brining her anyways, just to cover all bases. I've been up since 1 am because a fox keeps coming after her so it's kind of rushing her fate - if she's got to die and will be good to eat, I'd rather it be us doing the eating than that critter that gave our dogs mange! ------------------------------------
