Guest guest
Hi Josh, I can tell you about my experience with APTA mentoring. I contacted three mentors with amazing credentials and reputations who were listed on the website. The return phone calls and emails ranged from no response to a response within one month. The delayed responses were significant enough that I instead built a local skilled group that I can consult with on specific issues; none of them PT's but all of them medically business-savvy. This was a number of years ago (3) so perhaps my experience was just a fluke and things have improved since then. The SBDC (small business development center) has been pivotal in helping me with my business. I would recommend them highly...and they are free! I would still value a mentor and look forward to hearing further responses from the group on this question. Best regards, Hampton PT, BCIA-PMDB www.corept.org APTA Small Business Mentoring For those of you who started your own independent therapy clinics AND who were members of the APTA AND who used the APTA's mentoring and informational services...Did you find the APTA's services very helpful when starting your practice, or were there other community services or books that you found were more beneficial? I am seeking a mentoring program to help in focusing my efforts while developing my practice. Thank you for your input! Guest guest
Hi Josh, We did only a little consulting with APTA resources but went mainly through the APTA Private Practice section. My experience was good but then I contacted clinic owners who I had met through my term as Idaho PT Association President. Bottom line, my experience with mentoring through the APTA is not comparable to others because of the contacts I had. As far as what helped us in the beginning. We utillized experts in the SCORE program though the local small business center. These are retired executives that can counsel you on standard business practices like your business plan, corporate structure and financing options. Since many of these volunteers know the local business market and climate, they may help you understand what you need to succeed. In addition, I think the publications that the APTA Private Practice section have put out on starting a practice are very helpful as a comprehensive guide to all the things you need to do. Good luck!
