Our work is based on the principle that every woman has a right to safely manage her own fertility and that empowering women to control their own fertility will benefit women, their families and communities. We work globally to increase women's ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights and to reduce abortion-related deaths and injuries. We seek to expand the availability, quality and sustainability of abortion and related reproductive health services, as well as to improve the enabling environment. Ipas believes that no woman should have to risk her life or health because she lacks safe reproductive health choices The India country program works towards: (a) Increasing access to safe abortion care by strengthening training systems and service delivery of comprehensive abortion care services in primary health care settings; ( Action research on abortion issues from the perspective of women, communities, and service providers, in order to influence advocacy, policy, service delivery and training initiatives; © Policy and advocacy initiatives that increase women’s access to safe abortion services and (d) Facilitating introduction & promoting use of appropriate technologies for early safe abortion. With the success from piloting both training and service delivery initiatives in selected districts of three different states, Ipas is now working closely with the state governments of Bihar, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand & Madhya Pradesh to scale up services and thereby increasing access to safe abortion services. Ipas is looking for a Project Coordinator to be based in Ranchi, Jharkhand Office for implementing a new initiative on medication abortion (MA). Tenure: The position is full-time contract for one and half year (18 months). General Description: Ipas is undertaking a new initiative to introduce, evaluate and disseminate an innovative model for providing MA at a community level and to inform women about safe abortion services using multiple channels, including community based intermediaries. The project will also document the effect of a communication strategy (using intermediaries / inter personal communication techniques /mid-media efforts) in altering the knowledge and perceptions about MA in the community. Ipas will implement the pilot model in two selected blocks of Ranchi district in Jharkhand. The Project Coordinator will be based in our Ranchi office and will be responsible for overall implementation of the pilot initiative. The Project Coordinator will work closely with the country office at Delhi and the state implementation team in Jharkhand to ensure effective and efficient implementation of the proposed activities. The Project Coordinator will lead and manage all activities including training of selected health intermediaries, on-ground communication activities, and working closely with partner NGOs and other stakeholders. The Position reports to the Research & Evaluation advisor, Ipas India, and receives administrative support from the State Program Officer. Specific Duties and Responsibilities: A. Project planning, management & implementation: Lead person for effective implementation of project activities in consultation with the MA project team. Specific Responsibilities include: Developing and updating Implementation Plan, Resources Required Working closely with the sub-contracted NGO for ensuring training/orientation of identified intermediaries Ensuring functioning of service delivery sites in the project site in coordination with the state implementation team Helping the project team in identifying effective NGO partners and Intermediaries for achieving the project deliverables Recruiting short term consultants (field supervisors) for monitoring the field activities out-sourced to NGO partners Managing administrative and financial issues related with the functioning of the partner NGO in terms of delivering sub-contracted activities Carry out other duties as assigned. B. Designing & implementing communication activities: Provide leadership in the implementation of core communication activities through intermediaries, mid-media and outreach activities. These include: Working closely with the partner NGO for identifying and clustering the targeted universe, designing Interpersonal Communication (IPC) strategy and recruiting quality IPCs. Taking lead in developing and pre-testing culturally acceptable script and information cues for the mid-media (e.g. drama or puppet show) and reminder media (e.g Wall Painting) activities Reviewing and providing inputs to all IEC materials developed for the pilot intervention C. Monitoring and supervision: The person remains responsible in monitoring the routine work of the sub-contracted NGOs and research agencies, and supervising field level consultants for ensuring quality performance and time lines. D. Process documentation: In coordination with the project team s/he needs to document all field related MIS information, as well as document the processes and challenges of field work with a view to providing inputs in donor reporting, project documentation and internal & external publications. E. Networking: In close coordination with the state implementation team the project coordinator needs to keep healthy relationships with state officials, medical doctors, ICDS local bodies, local NGOs and village level influencers for maintaining a supportive environment. Core Requirements: a.. Minimum requirement Graduate degree in a social science, anagement or public health discipline. Master’s degree preferred. b.. 3-5 years of working experience in the health/development sector. Experience in developing and implementing communication strategies and campaigns would be an added advantage. c.. Excellent communications and writing skills in both English and Hindi. d.. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. e.. Demonstrated computer experience; knowledge of word processing and spreadsheets is essential. Familiarity with statistical package like SPSS would be an added advantage. f.. Ability to contribute in a collegial, team environment. g.. Strong management skills, including experience in project administration, supervision of research field staff, managing outsourced activities. h.. Ability and willingness to travel to the rural areas of Jharkhand. i.. Ability to function in a multi-discipline and multi-cultural team.
