Guest guest Posted July 9, 2007 Report Share Posted July 9, 2007 Dear All, on behalf of the North East India Harm Reduction Network, NEIHRN would like to convey the sad message that our President, Rev Dr P Vanlalmuana who is also the founder and executive director of SHALOM, Churachandpur expired on July 7 at his residence. As mark of respect to the departed soul, the NEIHRN team and well wishers observed a two-minute silence at Hotel MASS during the North East India consultation workshop on Harm Reduction. The participants shared the sorrow and bereavement of the family members. Dr Muana, a well known Social Worker, actively involved in curbing the menace of drug use and hiv/aids related issues in the world is one of the pioneers of Harm Reduction approach and strategies in the country. After working for more than 20 years at the Govt health set ups, he started his work in the field of drugs and hiv/aids in the year 1995 after taking voluntary retirement from the government services. Born on 17 March 1994, he came to Manipur in the year 1959 from his native village Zotlang in Mizoram for studies since there was no educational insititution at that time. He was among the top ten position holders in his matriculation in 1963. He stood 9th position from DM College in his PUC Sc exams and completed his medical studies, MBBS from Rangaraya in Andhra Pradesh in the year 1970. He joined the government service in 1971 and was posted at various nooks and corners of Manipur from Parbung to Ukhrul and from Lungthulin to Khoupum. He took voluntary retirement as medical superintendent of State TB Hospital, Chingmeirong and started SHALOM in Churachandpur. As a SHALOM founder executive director, he had presented papers at various international meets held at Kobe, Japan, Geneva Switzerland, Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, UK, Washington US, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and Paris France among others. During his service in the field of HIV/AIDS he was responsible for various positions in the state, region as well as at the international arena - Executive Board member, Global Fund. Dr Muana served the Manipur Presbyterian Church Synod as an Executive Committee member and also an ordained Pastor in the Presbyterian church. Dr Muana married his wife in the year 1974 and he is survived by his wife and four daughters and one grandchild. The funeral service was conducted on July 8 with more than 39 organisations and individual from various background and expertise attended the ceremony.
