Hi Carolyn

I had this problem with Adam and it was a huge issue at the time. He was on

formula but his

wonderful (!) dad started to complain about the expense and at 6 months demanded

we go to

homo milk (that's our next stage after formula because the fat content helps

with the brain

development) but then, he was constipated. Children of any age will strain when

having a

bowel movement and sometimes (especially since you are introducing new foods

Dr. H.

recommended) they can be hard. That's normal. But if they are tiny little balls

(like

Marbles) then he is constipated. You need to try prunes first and then go from

there. If

there are no marbles, then I would think continue on--it's his body adjusting to

the diet.

But if they are marbles cut out one of the new things at a time (strained

carrots??) or

anything else and work backwards to see if you can get him regular again. Adam

would have a

bowel movement every day--seemed regular--but the marbles were the dead give

away.

Could that be the crying at night (ie.not teeth but constipation)? Are you still

on formula?

Have you switched brands recently? Have you started pediasure??

Look at all these options and if you are not sure email Dr. H. and list all the

new things

you have been trying and see if she can quickly pin point the problem.

Adam didn't get to go to homo milk until 18 months. His dad was pissed. I still

remember the

GP writing in her notes " the father demands homo milk--is concerned with cost " .

She was

livid.

Good luck and if you have any more info send it out. I'm an expert when it comes

to that. If

need be I'll look up more thoroughly in my notes other methods I used to get

Adam unplugged.

I remember he hated the prunes so I did something else but I can't recall right

now.

Hello Carolyn,

Hey I heard that pear juice can help a great deal with hard stools.

My kids loved it more than any other juice. It's mild and sweet to

the taste. Worth a try. Hope things continue to go well for Noah.

Btw. Storm had a tooth when he was born, and got all his baby teeth

in quite a bit earlier than his sister had.

Hi Carolyn,

If Noah is eating cereal, you can add a teaspoon of canola oil to his cereal.

That adds about 40 calories and will definitely soften his stool.

I hope this helps.

Carolyn

Just remember it is normal for all children (even little babies) to miss a day

and it is

normal to strain. It's not normal to have marbles!!!! Take care.

Carolyn- try baby food pears or prunes or plums, they worked for us with

Nate. Try to avoid bananas and apples-sauce or juice- because they usually

make the kids more constipated.

Carloly,

Don't knkow if Ken will agree but. over the months I have aded canola

oil to lots of things. The jarred cereal with fruit should be just

fine but, you have to mix it well.

Hope this helps,

Meribeth

PS - Happy Thanksgiving to all

Carolyn,

This could be from change in diet, to the vitamins, to lack of liquids. My

son, who was iron suppliments for his first year because of prematurity, had

an awful time. We would have a weekly celebration once a week when he would

fill his drawers. Be sure to ask the doctor.

Hi Carolyn,

I hope you had a good Thanksgiving.

Sorry for the delay in answering. My internet service at home was down all

weekend so I was completely out of touch.

I am sorry but I am not familiar with that type of cereal but if you can stir in

a teaspoon of canola oil I think it should be fine.
