Guest guest
Mayor lin heads to India Mayor will support 'I Am Powerful' program which helps women with HIV/AIDS By ERIC STIRGUS,The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Published on: 02/01/08 Atlanta Mayor Shirley lin is scheduled to leave today on a week- long trip to India to support a program that helps women as well as people with HIV/AIDS. The " I Am Powerful " program, run by the humanitarian organization CARE, assists women learning entrepreneurial skills. It is lin's second overseas trip as part of the program. lin visited South Africa in April 2006. " I am pleased to have been involved in CARE's I Am Powerful campaign to see first-hand women from all over the world who are finding their voice through this public education effort, " the mayor said. " The trip to India will highlight some of the solutions that CARE is offering to combat the social and economic problems that have exacerbated the HIV/AIDS crisis in that country. " A CARE spokesman said lin will talk with leaders of one of India's largest banks about the importance of the agency's work with women. She also will participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony for a community assuming control of a savings and loan operation that CARE helped start. CARE is paying for the trip, agency spokesman Rick Perera said. The trip comes three days after the mayor announced the city has a projected $70 million deficit. lin's spokeswoman Beverly Isom noted the trip was planned long before lin was aware of the city's budget situation. She declined comment on whether lin should reconsider taking the trip http://www.ajc.com/services/content/metro/atlanta/stories/2008/02/01/f ranklin_0202.html?cxtype=rss & cxsvc=7 & cxcat=
