Congratulations!

Surgeries of all kinds are being performed on people living with HIV

for many years in some of the hospitals in Pune

These include craniotomies, spine surgeries, joint replacements, etc.

Apart form routine surgeries such as appendicectomies,

hysterectomies, laparotomies, etc.

Good to see other people are joining in. Better late than never.

Dear forum

/message/8228

i was greatly disappointed on seeing the news 'cataract surgery

conducted successfully on AIDS patient' because it is the duty of

every optomologist to perform the eye operation to any patient

irrespective of the patient HIV status.

By adapting universal precautions i hope the fear of contacting HIV

is ruled out and there is no difference in operation technically to a

HIV- patient and HIV+ patient. I don't know why news are

highlighting a normal operation to a 'mega achievement'. To be

honest it is not an achievement, but it is his duty.

In spite of all awareness and advocacy programes to the medical

practitioners it is surprise to see that doctors still finds PLHIVs

as an abnormal flock and restricted to treat PLHA's.

This 'cataract surgery' is the typical evidence and shows the medical

practitioners attitude towards PLHA.

I request the medical practitioner teams not to highlight any works

when they are doing it to any PLHA because they are not different

from other human being. It is appreciated if the same cataract

surgery is conducted to other living beings in this world.

Now, globally many operations like heart surgery, Cancer operations,

etc. are conducted to many PLHA's daily. I personally feels that

cataract operation is not a 'big work' when compared to other

operations mentioned.

I request medical practitioners to explore more about this HIV

pandamic instead of focusing on small issues and fames. But I

congratulate the medical team, that have conducted the operation in

a successful manner.

Dear FORUM,

Re: /message/8235

Lucien' point of view on the 'Successful cataract surgery' on PLHA is fine but

it is such very important that the surgeons get confident that PLHAs surgery is

like any other person's surgery with due precautions undertaken.

Other than attending seminars and getting trained in the care of HIV patients,

it the news of other surgeons operating which is going to help in building

confidence.

I feel that is why such news is a welcome news and the surgeon deserves the

appreciation he is getting.

Dear FORUM,

Re: /message/8228

Unless the medical fraternity starts treating HIV/AIDS like any other

chronic disease and HIV+ve person like any other patient, positive

patients will continue to be discriminated and media will continue to

give unnecessary attention. This will only give rise to more fear in

the mind of people with HIV infection.

It is high time we all started seeing it like some chronic disease so

that people with HIV infection can live like any other person with any

other infection without any special fears or guilt.

Dear Forum

Re: /message/8228

I fully agree with Ms.Lucien's openion. It is a microsurgery, but the

attitude of the surgeons still remains apprehensive.

Under the National Programme for Control of Blindness(NPCB) the special

instructions have been issued for not to test/advise for HIV as a

presurgical diagnostic test.

Contrary information may be forwarded to the undersighned.

Dear all,

Re: /message/8235

With the current scenario existing in the devoloping countries especially India

I think we should flood the media with positive news like this and tell every

body HIV is a preventable chronic ilness like any other ill ness . Unfortunatley

media focuss only the news of discrimination and everybody belives that is the

norm.

I agree that we should not glorify the medical care for HIV but we need to

disseminate the news of non discriminationatory care and mainstreming.

Again let me repeat what HIV need is not gloroification or discrimination but

mainstreaming with concurrent improvement in the health care delivery in

general.

Dear All,

Re: /message/8235

We at Dr.Daljit Singh Eye Hospital, Amritsar in consultation with people dealing

with HIV, especially Dr.Rakesh Bharti( Skin Specialist) of Amritsar, try to help

out patients with CMV Retinitis and we routinely operate on the eyes of these

patients and in most of them.

The entire treatment is done free of cost, since most of these patients cannot

afford. WE DO NOT DISCRIMINATE and we should not let them feel inferior.

Sincerely,
