Guest guest
Hello , My question...our son's GI wants to do a small bowel follow-through to check for strictured areas in his small intestine. We have not done this test yet...we keep putting it off becasue of having to drink the barium. My doctor also said i should do this test as they were unsure whether i had UC or Crohns after coloscopy. So i agreed to go ahead the sooner the better so that he gets his answers and that i am done with all tests. I was 5 months into SCD when i had this examination and doing absolutely great also so i was also afraid how it will affect me. I needed to clean my colon 1 day before the examination and luckily all products were legal. The next day i had to go early in the morning for the examination, i drank 1 glass of this barium (i didn't ask what was inside but i already knew it would be sweet, they make it so that people are not disgusted to drink it). So the liquid is white like milk but thicker and to me it was terribly sweet especially as on SCD i wasn't used anymore to a lot of sweetnes. The exam took several hours because they make several x-ray photos every 30 or 60 minutes while the liquid is travelling but with me it somehow didn't move for several hours so i had to drink some water and walk a lot to speed it up (i stayed 5 hours anyway in the hospital). So when i got home in beginning of afternoon i started to drink clear soup broth and i basically did the intro for few days and i began with more liquid or puree things and then added solid things. For first 2 days i still had liquid stools with white barium inside but after as my system got it out it quickly returned to loosy and then normal stools, in less than 1 week. It is a radio liquid so to me they said i should be careful for next 3 months not to get pregnant or to be close to small children few days right after the examination so it is not so innocent this examination. I wanted to have it done sooner than later so that my doctor would have all he needed. And luckily there was nothing wrong anywhere inside of me, even doctor said the results are great (i atribute it do diet because even my inflammation that was seen at coloscopy 5 months before wasn't seen here anymore). Because our son is improving, and seems so much better, I hesitate to even do the test. But if there is stricturing, we should know... but, if he is getting better, what's the point?? I can't help you in making a decision, i did what i thought was right for me especially since my final diagnosis depended on this exam (crohn or colitis) and also the medication as doctor said it is not treated exactly the same way. I can just tell you that for me at the end it didn't give as many problems or crisis as i was afraid of. Take care and a lot of health to your son, Janja UC diagnosed 07/2007 (but probably already since 2005) SCD 08/2007
Guest guest
my 12 yr old has crohn's and he was on the diet for a month when they asked us to do the barium swallow. he did not get any worse from the procedure though he had some constipation for a day or two after; the barium can cause that. aside from that, we stuck with SCD and he's doing fine now. i'm no doctor but it makes sense to have it done once so the dr's know with just what they are dealing. my .02 adam cd 21 mo scd 15 mo Cowell ('97) UR-Delaware 1156 High Street Santa Cruz, CA 95064 (fax) davidow@... > Hello Everyone, > > I am brand new to the group, but have been doing the SCD with my 11 yo > son for about 4 months.
