Guest guest
Dear Listmates, I have a few basic questions: 1. What over-the-counter medications are " legal " ? Motrin? Tylenol? Aspirin? Actifed? Is one form more legal than another (say, gel caps better than tablets?) 2. What exactly is a " flare-up " ? People keep talking about it, and I assume it is when you start bleeding or having diarrhea after not having had those symptoms in awhile. Is that right? 3. I'm afraid the yogurt might be making me sick (it's homemade, by the book). Someone talked about beginning with only a tablespoon a day. Could anyone point me to where advice about starting up yogurt usage might be? (I was fine with homemade yogurt that a friend made for me two weeks ago, but ran out, and then had to wait about a week for my Yogourmet to come and make my first batch of yogurt. And now it seems like I'm not tolerating the yogurt.) Thanks for any guidance on these!! Ann
Guest guest
Hi Ann, I don't know if I'll be much help. Misty Kimble , LACD SCD - 3 months 19 days Ann and Porras wrote: 1. I've taken alieve a couple times when I just couldn't handle the pain from a headache, but that's about it and I don't know if it was legal or not. 2. What exactly is a "flare-up"? I have Crohn's so a flare for me is noticeable inflammation, bloating with gas, C and/or D, and intesne intestinal pain. I think everyone's flares are somewhat different. 3. Were you on SCD or a med you aren't on anymore when you ate her yogurt? It was wierd, things I could tolerate before SCD gave me problems once I started. I think it all has to do with the healing process. From what I've read, yogurt replinishes the good bacteria in your body so the bad ones might be dying off and the good ones repopulating and that's what might be causing you to not tolerate it. I know I could only tolerate about a TBS a day for a couple days. Within 2 weeks I was eating a 7 oz jar a day and now 2 months later, I think I'm going to start trying 2 jars a day. Guest guest
Hi Ann, I don't think you're going to find an OTC medicine that is free from illegal binders, fillers, etc. Elaine always said that if you are in pain and need the medicine then you should take it. Another option is to have your medicines compounded without any illegal fillers by a compounding pharmacy. I also want to mention that NSAIDs (ibuprofen (Advil), naproxen (Aleve), aspirin, etc.) are contradicted for folks with IBD. They are hard on the gut, can cause bleeding, etc. You should stick with acetaminophen (Tylenol). Hope this helps.
