Hello,

I have a six year old son (soon to be 7)who eats everything except

bread, cheese and milk. He has a SHORT attention span, in

particularly with school work. He does have eye contact and is

sociable. However, he acts innappropriately when he is trying to

say " hi. " He tends to get into someone's face to look into their eyes

and gain their attention. He then proceeds to hug them and tries to

get the person to pick him up in order to start or continue

socializing.

He hit every milestone at the right time except for speech and was

potty trained by 3 and 8 mos. He generally follows directions but is

VERY hyper at times. He is not underweight and has no visible stomach

problems. He has always had normal bowel movements and a great sleep

pattern.

He did not recieve all his shots. (stopped at age 4) He had no

reaction to any shot but I thought it would be best. He loves music,

biking, swimming, ice skating, the trampoline, concerts, playing with

pets and other children. He communicates using the few words he has.

He tries to pronounce some words but usually uses " yes. " I have begun

PECS about three weeks now and he has had some success. He currently

attends an Autistic school but has never been officially diagnosed

with it. I opted for this school because of his speech delay,

the " open door policy " of the school (because of abuse) and small

classrooms. He has been to specialist (9) who have literally said

they were not sure if he was Autistic. Four of them believe that I am

doing much harm by placing him in a school with children with no

desire to socialize (as he does) and want him in an ordinary school

with an aid. I asked the school district to put " autistic " on his

IEP in order to get speech in school. He has only gotten about 8 mos

of speech throughout his lifetime. (Through his insurance)

But for now I need to find out if a diet would help him. Like every

other Mom -I am not concerned with the label - I JUST NEED TO HELP

HIM!! Thank you for reading this, please excuse the typos, I

am " multitasking " -aren't we all! ANY info would be greatly

appreciated. GOD BLESS YOU ALL.

My son is autistic, although good eye contact and not particularly ANTI-social, but not terribly interested in typical socializing either. He is extremely language-delayed, and self-stims a lot. He is 8. We tried Feingold diet, and Gluten-free-cassein-free, each for several months, with no improvement in him at all. He's never had obvious digestive problems, and I gave up special diets for him long ago, but I am considering trying SCD this summer. For one thing, it's really helping me with ulcerative colitis, and for another, since I'm already cooking everything SCD for me, I might as well for my children. Maybe I'm biased because SCD is working for me so far, but SCD seems to make more sense to me than GF-CF or Feingold. I also believe, however, that my son has more going on than purely digestive issues. But having a healthy digestive system can only help him. Besides, if I have UC, my kids might as well start eating better foods now than later to avoid their own cases of UC later in life.

A little off topic, but even though my son IS quite text-book autistic, being in a regular gen-ed class has done wonders for his speech and behavior (no, he's not speaking a lot, but it is helping little by little). PECs, by the way, was a huge help for him too. But speech develops SO slowly... Be very patient! It is awful that you can't get speech therapy without the autism diagnosis. Does your son have an IEP, and have you checked out s Law website to see if you could get the speech services AND a gen-ed placement for him both? Sorry if this was more advice than you were looking for.

This sounds a lot like my son, but he started receiving speech

services art age 2. He was completely non-verbal then. He also had

the habit of staring directly in someones eyes and was super hyper.

He received tons of services from the regional center including

OT,PT,speech, floortime etc. His speech especially receptive

(comprehension) was very behind. We started SCD in October based on

a friend's recommendation because he said that my son

looked " puffy " . We didn't do any planning and agreed to try it for 2

weeks because we figured it could't hurt. We were immediately

stunned by the results. Within those 2 weeks, he became a completely

different child. We didn't even introduce the diet properly (we went

back to intro later) and we still got amazing results. We have been

on SCD for 7 months, and he is above average physically and

verbally. He is completely calm and fits in great at his

neurotypical preschool. When we started our therapies at age 2, all

we knew wa sthat he had low muscle tone and sensory integration

disorder. We found out a year ago that he actually had an in-utero

stroke in the second trimester which accounted for most of his

symptoms. But, even the neurologist felt that it didn't explain

everything. it turns out that this diet solved everything.

Hi ,

Thank you for your response. I am sorry I was unable to reply

prior, but my computer is a bit " off. " Anyhow, what happened to your

son " in-utero stroke " may be something that may have happened to my

son. (one psychologist mentioned it about a year ago) How did you

find out, tests etc? My son does not have low muscle tone and may be

sensory. I am just not sure. However, did your son have ANY

problems with his bowel movements. I am SERIOUSLY considering this

diet but my son has ABSOLUTELY no problems with his bowel movements,

he goes about three times a day and has perfect BM's. So this is

what concerns me, will it be OK to do this to a child with no BM

problems?

He was was just approved for speech and hopefully will be approved

for OT. He has such a small vocabulary of mispronounced words.

ie.. " es " for yes.. " peease " for please. He undrestands quite a bit

but not age appropriate. It warms my heart to hear your son is making

such strides, my prayers be for continued success. Excuse my typos..

I am homeschooling while typing! (fun, fun)

I really want to thank you for your reply as maybe what happened to

your son may be able to help my son. I look forward to hearing from

you.

In short: Yes.SCD is a healthy diet that anyone can do. A lot of people with no BM problems use it. Elaine Gottschall and her hubbie did it for seven years, only to support their daughter. I do it (no BM problems) in solidarity with my son, and find it extremely helpful for my neuropsychiatric stuff. Around half of autistic kids show BM problems --but the other half don't, and whether or not they do, they thrive on SCD.My child's BMs improved immediately (had only been affected for 5 weeks when I found SCD), but the change to his behaviour, development and cognition were mind-blowing delights! At 3 years of age, his sleep time moved from 2 hours at a time to 9 hours; his language moved from 30 single

words to full sentences; he gained total bladder and poop control and so potty trained himself; he became very calm and easygoing; he stopped screaming; he stopped bashing his head on the floor when people sang; he allowed his teeth to be brushed; etc.Again, his BMs were perfect until just 5 weeks pre-SCD. Thank goodness for the diarrhea that eventually developed, or I would not have found the cure for his neuropsych stuff! I wish I had known about SCD pre-bowel problems --my child could have been so much happier for his first three years!BadenSCD Day 11Child 3 yrs; SCD 4 mosI am SERIOUSLY

considering this

diet but my son has ABSOLUTELY no problems with his bowel movements,

he goes about three times a day and has perfect BM's. So this is

what concerns me, will it be OK to do this to a child with no BM

problems?

My son was diagnosed by an MRI. My regular ped. sent me to see a

neurologist when she realized how serious I was to find out why he

was having these problems. We had the MRI in March of 2007. The

scan also showed a massive sinus infection that was symptomless. He

was put on 2 rounds of antibiotics to finally cure it. Ever since

the antibiotics, he had huge loose stools several times a day.

Before then, his BMs were basically normal maybe a little C

sometimes. I would suggest that you try the diet for at least a few

months. I don't see a down side other than a winey kid. The diet is

the healthiest thing that has ever happened to my family.
