Guest guest
Hi Amy! We've been there too, so you're not alone! Good handwashing is important especially for older children in the house. With Josh we do preventative things. The first sign of a runny nose we use benadryl at night & raise the head of his crib mattress, a vaporizer is also useful. Our doctor recommends the benadryl but I think we've only been doing that since Josh was about 10lbs, so please ask your doctor. I know we used an infants version of Sudafed that Tylenol makes. I think it was called Tylenol cold infant drops. If we get to the fever stage ( we almost always due) we also use the Tylenol, Motrin combo. It's very effective & usually lets me sleep between doses. We have been in the ER many times, and I always take a packet of RSS info with me. You can bet that none of the nurses have ever heard of it & if your lucky maybe the attending will have heard of it. It's just easier for me to have it because usually by the time we end up in the ER Josh has been very sick for a day or two & I'm too tired & worried to go into the whole thing. I just politely say I have brought some info on the syndrome if you'd like to see it. Also as they get older & still are so tiny, you can get some pretty odd looks even from medical professionals. Hang in there,. we've all been there!
Guest guest
Hi Amy - There is a vacination they give " at risk " infants to avoid getting some auful respritory virus (the initials of which have escaped me). I tried to get this for my son last year when I was in your shoes - facing the flu season with a 5lb-er. My doctor's office refused. Apparently the vacination is very expensive. I offered to pay out of pocket and they still would not agree to give it, sighting that it was relatively untested anyway. Given that this was a year ago, perhaps you could inquire about it. Sorry I don't remember the name of the virus but it is a common and relatively serious respritory virus that develops from a cold a child can't shake. Good luck. > Hi Amy, > > Yes we had and still have that fear for our son . Guest guest
I think so but I am not sure as we have not had the shot yet. Haven (My daughter) goes in for her second round of shots next week. Thank you all for your support. This first year is a real pisser so far. I don't know what I would do without you all! Guest guest
Hey everyone In regards to decongestants at the first signs of sickness (sounds like we all have " battle plans " at the first sniffle } one product I find is extremely helpful is dimetapp. Check the bottle but I remember giving it to my kids as infants. It really works to dry them up and does make them sleepy. But now that my kids have had it for 11 years and 8 years respectively, the 'sleepy' part doesn't seem to work anymore. Anyway, just thought I would add my two cents. (in Canadian funds!) Debby wrote: > > Hi Amy! > We've been there too, so you're not alone! Guest guest
Re: flu vaccinations I finally have one up on you all for being in the great white north of Canada (specifically Ontario). Our wonderful (grrrr!!!) premier has decided that all people of Ontario can get a flu shot this season for free. Sign me and the kids up now!!!!!!!! This is his way of easing the crisis in our emergency rooms (all full--doors LOCKED--daily) during last year's flu season. He had the haired brained idea of cutting funding to hospitals, cut nurses and beds and then " wonders " why the emergency rooms are overcrowded. Hence, his " fix " is to give us all flu shots. (we citizens have tried to say throw the money back into health care.....but he seems to be suffering from selective deafness!!)
