Laboratory fined for wrong HIV diagnosis

The Karnataka State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has found

the Manjunatha Pathology laboratory in Mandya district guilty of

deficient service. Ms Meenakshi of K R Pet taluk had gone to this

laboratory for a blood test. The results of the test showed that she

was HIV positive.

She later went to the Government hospital for a re-test. The hospital

certified that she was not HIV positive. She complained against the

laboratory to the district consumer forum which dismissed her

complaint.

She went for appeal in the State Commission and its President Justice

Chandrashekaraiah ruled that the laboratory was guilty of deficient

service. He ordered it to pay up Rs 25,000 as compensation to Ms

Meenakshi.
