Guest guest
I think I moved my son too quickly through the diet. I started him on yogurt and cookies w/almond flour after only a week on SCD. He seemed to be OK at first, started getting worse again Sunday...more D, gas, blood, and more frequent trips to the bathroom. He was back on the intro diet Mon and Tues, but continues to feel worse today. He had scrambled eggs for breakfast and beef patty for lunch...both ended in D, blood, and cramps. I'm not certain what I should be feeding him now. He's very underweight (6'4 " and 130 pounds) and I'm trying to at least maintain his weight. Any suggestions what I can feed him and what's going on? Also, is BBQing acceptable instead of broiling meat? Thanks. Caroline 20 year old son w/CD SCD 15 days
Guest guest
I wouldn't eat nut butters/flours, peanut butter for at least six months. Or the pork rinds. And nothing raw like grapes or other fruit. I don't think BBQ is really seen as 'good' but I'd eat it. Baked in teh oven or an indoor grill may work better. I can't remember why (Marilyn will know) barbecuing is bad. Chicken soup and yogurt, cheesecake, low fiber veggies, etc. again but at least you can eat all you want. Homemade mayo for flavor on the hamburger, chicken, etc. Hope ya'll feel better, Debbie 39 crohns I think I moved my son too quickly through the diet. Guest guest
Thank Debbie. I just searched what Marilyn had to say about BBQ, and think it's time to take out the Forman for his burgers. Guest guest
Just want to respond re: moving to quickly through the diet as my son, age 23 - with chronic diarrhea and suspected crohn's - is also 6'4 " (but weighs 185 lbs). After 6 years of daily, and very frequent trips to the toilet, as well as bouts of bleeding, he is feeling very committed to the eating program. He's been following the intro diet for 6 weeks and is noting slow but steady improvement (in lowered frequency of and a new consistency to his BM's) but he has found that he does not tolerate additions to his basic foods well - eating an egg resulted in immediate diarrhea (and set him back by approximately a week). He's admittedly tired of the intro foods but is also understanding that introducing new foods has to go slowly for him and his system. He's certainly learning " you are what you eat " .... We're obviously new to this but sticking to the intro diet until all signs of diarrhea have cleared and going forward very, very cautiously seems to be the path for him. > > I think I moved my son too quickly through the diet. Guest guest
Hi, I usually cook carrots separate until they are very soft then add them to the soup. The onions and garlic may be gassy to him--it may be too soon but I use olive oil and sautee onions, garlic, any vegetables like that before adding the liquids. That seems to eliminate the problem for me. I don't eat sweet peas, at least not over a handful every once in awhile. I had to cook and freeze a lot in the beginning. For instance, eat something like acorn squash once and freeze the rest of it, take it out later and eat a little more. Lots of vegetables I have trouble eating so rotating just a small amount at a time worked. I do ok with baby lima beans, Italian green beans, well cooked carrots all the time. Nothing stringy or fibrous (still). It does get old but once you see relief, it's ok. Gelatin (if he likes it) is also a good protein. Do you guys have access to the Friendship Farmer's Dry Curd Cottage Cheese (Farmer's Cheese)? I eat that almost daily. The beef stew sounds like a good switch-up for him. The cookbooks are great, I don't have Lucy's but it helps to get ideas. Guest guest
Caroline, There are two schools of thought on moving into SCD -- one is to do the intro diet, and then just start eating normally, substituting SCD legal foods for the ones you (or your son) ate before SCD. The second calls for introducing foods one at a time, working from more readily digestible to more advanced, and allowing time between the introduction of each food so that you can see whether or not it is tolerated. When you have a problem like this, it's a very good idea to keep (or have him keep) a food diary. Date, time, location, what he ate -- and what the " results " were. Then if you see that (as many people do) say, pork rinds, result in increased symptoms, you know that it's too advanced a food for this point in the diet. Regrettably, the delicious nut flour goodies are something that many of us have to wait on for several months. I would drop back to the intro diet for a couple of days to let things settle down, and then start introducing foods one at a time. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
Guest guest
Hi Debbie, I'm cooking the onions with the beef for flavor, but will take them out before I serve it. The beef stew cooks for 3 hours so I think the carrots will be soft enough by the time it's finished cooking. I think. Right now for veggys I'm trying carrots and green beans...cooked forever. We do have Friendship Farmer Cheese here. As a matter of fact, Waldbaums has it on sale this week. $1.99 per package. I just bought 10 packages of it, although my son can't stand the taste. He eats it anyway, but right now everything seems to be disagreeing with him. He's so thin to begin with...I'm worried because he's losing more weight. He's always been able to tolerate the meats, but the fact that he having such a problem with everything now (including hamburgers) is very disconcerting to me. Is there any high calorie food that is relatively safe for most people? Thanks Caroline 20 year old son w/CD SCD 15 days > > Hi, I usually cook carrots separate until they are very soft then add them > to the soup. That might be because he's having a bit of a flare so that nothing agrees with him, rather than that he's reacting specifically to things he's usually fine with like meat, etc. Another thing you can do is make a beef broth with flanken and some veggies for flavor - another variation on the intro chicken soup. > He's so thin to begin with...I'm worried because he's > losing more weight. > He's always been able to tolerate the meats, but the fact that he > having such a problem with everything now (including hamburgers) is > very disconcerting to me. > Is there any high calorie food that is relatively safe for most > people? butter, mayonnaise, coconut oil - which is also an anti-inflammatory, which might be helpful. Guest guest
Just wanted to add that at that price of farmer's cheese, grab all you can! Seriously, it's up to $4.99 a bar here when I can find it. It may not be that way where you live. I didn't like it at first but with it heated slightly, cinnamon, yogurt butter and honey--awesome. Back when I was very limited, I even added smoked paprika on it and ate it on different cuts of meat. For some reason, ground meat was harder to digest than sliced or cutlet type meat. Then something changed and I was eating two roasted chickens, 18-egg cartons, two bars of the dry curd cottage cheese a week. It was like once I broke the barrier (six months of being very strict I think), I was hungry again not long after I ate lol. It tapered to a normal appetite. Banana pancakes were (Mara mentioned below) helped me a lot also in the beginning. I used 2 bananas to one egg. Once he feels better (imho) is when to worry, you feel you can eat something illegal and be okay but it eventually catches up. Or that's what happens with me. Debbie 39 crohn's There's a different intro on pecanbread.com and the stages. I'm sure you've checked it out--if not, you may get some ideas there. > Hi Debbie,> I'm cooking the onions with the beef for flavor, but will take them> out before I serve it.
