Guest guest
Colleagues: We’d like to bring to your attention a new resource for HIV prevention. Orient Longman, India, has just published a short book (104 pages) that offers practical advice to the general public about how they can protect themselves from HIV infection during common skin-piercing procedures. The core of the book is organized around 15 common events where people might be exposed to blood during health care (injections, dental care, OBGYN care, others), cosmetic services (shaving, tattooing, others), and in other situations. For each of these events, the book discusses the risks, and advises what people can do to be sure that they are safe – that they do not acquire HIV infections – during these events. Blood-borne HIV: Risks and Prevention, by Correa, Gisselquist, and Gore, is available at: https://www.orientlongman.com/display.asp?isbn=978-81-250-3462-9 The price is Rs 95 (US$ 2.45). All profits from the sales of this book go to a drop-in centre for people living with HIV/AIDS in Ratnagiri, India. The book dispels common misinformation that understates how long HIV survives in blood outside the body, and that underestimates the contribution of minor blood contacts to HIV epidemics. The book is primarily meant for the general public, but it could be also used as a text or resource in educational institutions and in organizations (government, NGOs and Positive Networks) committed to HIV prevention and care. The book has been written for an Indian audience, but much of the advice about how people can protect themselves from HIV during common skin-piercing events is relevant for any country or community where high percentages of the population are HIV-positive. You can also buy copies of this book from the authors: Mariette Correa - mariettec@... Gisselquist - david_gisselquist@... Deodatta Hari Gore - deo64@...
