Diane, please don't apologize for expressing your honest disappointment! I am

scheduled for UAE one week from today, and as many positive postings about the

procedure as I have seen, I believe it's also important for me to be realistic

and know that things aren't always sunshine and roses! I'm hoping for an

excellent outcome, but I am also trying to be realistic and know that with any

medical procedure there's always a chance that for whatever reason it won't

work. I'm not dwelling on it, but I will cross that bridge IF I come to it.

I'm sorry to hear your procedure wasn't successful, but thank you for sharing

your experience.

to agree, I haven't gotten much relief, other than no potty trips at

night. I'm still bloated, enlarged uterus, and other symtoms. The gyn

said (and this makes sense)when you shrink the fibroid in UAE, its like

shaving part of it away, but the volume of it doesn't change that much.

Its not that I have great faith in these docs, its just that I don't

feel that much better, and my tummy is still the same size as before. I

guess I was hoping things would change more dramatically. Also, I've

been bleeding for almost 2 months straight now, and my last period was

so painful, and heavy it was worse than any period before UAE. SOrry

about this, but I'm pretty disappointed, and needed to " talk " . Thanks

Hi Diane,

I'm sorry to hear about your problems. I'm new to this group and have

been just quietly reading the posts for a few months now. I too had

the fibroid embolization procedure. It was done back in Nov. of

2000. Mine was a failure also. None of the fibroids shrunk and in

fact I do believe they are starting to grow again as my symptoms have

worsened. (I have five fibroids, one of which rests against my

bladder, another against my anal canal) Oh joy!!!!!

The only alternative left for me is a hysterectomy which I refuse to

have. Lately though I have been reading up on this drug that was

recently FDA approved.(Mifepristone) It's supposed to dramatically

shrink fibroids, with very little side effects. I just put a phone

call in to my gyno, and she will get back to me. I'm praying this is

for real and would be a great alternative to any kind of surgery. If

you go to google(search engine) and type in the name of the drug you

can read for yourself all about it. Let's hope this is for real.

Good luck to you.

Pamela

I don't understand the statment " the one they targeted " . Didn't the

IR embolize both arteries? UAE does not treat individual fibroids,

it cuts off the blood that feeds ALL of the fibroids, unless of

course both arteries were not properly embolized.

I will post. Thanks!

Unfortunately, as the site you reference points out mifepristone is

not yet approved for fibroid treatment. There are several women in

this group who have taken part in the mifepristone studies and have

had shrinkage.

thank you...but all this means is that your doctor can prescribe it to

terminate pregnancy but not to shrink fibriods, unfortunately. I was one of

the women who participated in the study using mifepristone to shrink

fibroids.
