I have been on this diet for 6 weeks or so, and it has helped my IBS

symptoms immensely. At first being on the diet I had some kind of

cravings, almost like nicotine withdrawal. For the most part this has

gone away. I am no longer taking Tums, although I still have some gas.

I understand I am supposed to be on the SCD diet for about a year.

What if I broke down after 2 months and had, let's say, a pizza? Or a

chocolate chip cookie? Then let's say I found I still was ok. So then

I started eating bagels & creamcheese, my symptoms returned, so I had

to go back on the SCD diet. Would that mean I would need to be on the

SCD diet a whole year more from the date that I " slipped " ? (so far I

haven't slipped) Thanks.

Elaine says 'on the diet for at least one year after the last symptom has disappeared'. Not from when we started :)So if you cheat and have no symptom, you don't need to restart the clock. If you cheat and have a symptom, to be very safe in ensuring full healing you would start your one year count again.This said, the healing time does vary for all, depending on our age, degree of damage, diet enhancements (ie. how much bone broth we're drinking every day, etc). Maybe less time for some; possibly two or more years for people with UC, etc. Baden

Hello,You've gotten some good advice. I agree with what said. I just wanted to add a few things.Everyone is very different and there are no hard and fast rules on when you will be cured. None of us can say to you, 'exactly one year from the day you started the SCD you will be cured'. It doesn't work like that. And the guideline is not a year from the day that you started the diet, it's one year from your last symptom. From BTVC, "A rule of thumb is to stay on the diet for at least one year after the last symptom has disappeared." You also have to wonder how you ended up here. I can't imagine that going back to the SAD would lead you anywhere but right back here. For me it has been easier to just make peace with the fact

that the SCD will be a part of our lives probably forever. Maybe one day they will find a cure for CD and we can deviate a little but I don't see us ever returning to our former eating habits. My situation is different from yours. My husband has CD and I have no gut issues but follow the diet with him. I'm perfectly happy with it and it really is easy for me to not cheat. It doesn't bother me in the least when everyone I work with is eating donuts and kolaches for breakfast. I eat my apple crisp and I'm perfectly happy with it. For me, I had to get my mindset right. I don't think in terms of when can I get off this diet and have chocolate again. I focus on what we can have. There are some really wonderful SCD dishes and desserts. None of them include chocolate or bread or pasta, of course, but if you can focus more on how good what you're eating is rather than the fact that it's not chocolate or bread or pasta, you'll be much happier and the SCD will be

much easier for you. I don't know what all you are able to tolerate at this point but if you let me know, I can give you some of my favorite recipes. There is a whole world of foods out there that are legal and delicious. I honestly and truly don't feel deprived at all and I was a big, huge carboholic pre-SCD. I loved pasta and absolutely anything chocolate...it didn't matter what it was. Hi BGCee.

I am also on SCD because of IBS, in addition to medical problems that result

from gut problems.

I have been on SCD for 12 1/2 weeks. I accidentally cheated once, drinking

some grape juice that I hadn't realized contained aloe vera. I did not enjoy

my body's reaction to the aloe vera at all. Because that was a one-time

slip-up and I recovered fairly quickly, I did not restart my SCD calendar to

day 1. But I am being more careful.

At the start of the diet, I was convinced that my liking for chocolate would

keep me from staying on the diet. To my surprise, I haven't even craved

chocolate. I miss the portability of the caffeine boost, but not the

chocolate.

Why do you think you might break down in a few weeks and have a pizza? If

you want pizza, why not make your own? There are recipes at the various SCD

recipe sites, such as:

and in recipe books such as Raman Prasad's and at least one (maybe both, I

Since chocolate isn't allowed on SCD, I don't know of any online recipes for

SCD chocolate-chip cookies. But there are lots of SCD cookie recipes

available online. If you check the main recipe pages of the three URL's I

posted, you will find cookie recipes as well. There are also bread recipes.

Cream cheese is easy to simulate by dripping SCD home-made yogurt. In fact,

the only cream cheese I have eaten for over 20 years has been dripped

yogurt, as the lactose in regular cream cheese has been a problem for me.

The difference is that now I drip SCD yogurt, instead of commercially made

yogurt.

I am pleased with the results I have experienced so far by being on SCD. I

have not set a time goal for staying on this diet. I suspect that I will

stay on it forever, so as to prevent the problems that resulted from my not

being on this diet. So I am curious about your 1-year deadline. Who set it?

What do you expect to happen during 1 year on SCD, and what do you expect to

happen after you stop following SCD?

But in answer to your question, I think you have to follow SCD faithfully

for the entire year. Eating non-SCD pizza or cookies or bagels or cream

cheese, in my opinion (but I am a newbie, so my opinion may be wrong), would

mean that you aren't on SCD, and that you would have to go back to square

one and start the year all over again, after eating the non-SCD foods you

have mentioned.
